So here’s my debut track at last – I’m still not 100% sure that this is the final version (it probably is, though), and for the time being I’ve uploaded it to a player here instead of making it downloadable. Once I’m happy-ish, it’ll be going up on here as a 320kbps file, of course. (Actually, the player isn’t working well right now, so click the link at the bottom of the post to download the 112kbps version instead)
The original is an unfinished track by Zio from last year sometime – it was showing some real promise (the main melody, especially), and Zio very kindly asked me if I’d like to try my own version. Zio’s original is 160bpm, with some real grinding bass stuff going on, but for a mastering novice/idiot like me, keeping all that in would have meant no room for any other sounds…. In the end, once I had the main melody in there I tried not to listen to Zio’s version at all, and just messed around by myself – two things I went for were a dark/nasty breakdown and a sort of high-speed feel to the drums/tune itself. Other than that, I didn’t really have a clue what I was doing, and learnt a lot as I was going along…a bit of a step up from FastTracker 2 (!).
Anyway, even though this version is only 112kbps, it’d be great if you have a listen and let me know what you think – good, bad, all feedback welcome. About the FINRG style snotty synth…it’s an awesome sound, and I can’t really take credit for it as it’s in Zio’s original. I tweaked it very slightly, but all thanks to him for that.
So I DL’d this 2 days ago, but didn’t comment on it immediately. I wanted to listen to it a few more times. :3
I should start by saying that I liked the music, but not to the point of being “wow’d”. I absolutely loved the dark atmosphere it created, though, which makes me believe the tune lives up to its name. :p
Moving on.
The tune builds up pretty nicely, but when it supposedly comes to its “peak”, I keep waiting for the said “peak”. I don’t how to explain it in better words, but that’s how I felt when I heard it.
The melody is nice, I liked it. Also, from 02:15 onwards, it reminded me of Alek Száhala. :3
All in all, I think you’ve made a pretty solid track with an immersive dark atmosphere, with a great melody, but that misses that little something to make it truly epic.
These are my thoughts. I’m also wondering if you’re gonna release more tracks in the future. Do you have any plans?
Hi BerN – first thing, thanks a lot for taking the time to listen/post your feedback, I definitely appreciate it 🙂
The second thing is that this might be the most useful feedback I’ve had so far! Glad to hear you like the atmosphere, I tried pretty hard with that…but I know exactly what you mean when you mention the ‘peak’ of the track not really doing enough. I was trying to work out what the extra something should be, but couldn’t seem to get it right this time…
Anyway, I’m quite happy with it as it’s my first attempt, but I’m still learning even the most basic stuff about Reason, so it’ll be a long time before I can come up with something really ‘epic’ 😉 I’ll definitely keep trying though, and in the next day or two I’m thinking to start another one.
“(…)so it’ll be a long time before I can come up with something really ‘epic’.”
For the looks of it, it won’t be a long time at all. I really think that for a first job, you’ve done really well.
Although I never produced any track whatsoever, I assume it must be no easy task, so yeah.
