Kreatrix Evilution Volume 6 – The End

You might well have seen this one already, but definitely worth mentioning – the last chapter in the Kreatrix Evilution series, this is without a doubt the best tracklist I’ve laid my eyes on for a good while. Nomic, Tyranoid/Stongstream, Micken, Epyx & Cyrez, Substanced….it’s really a roll-call of the new generation’s best artists.

Of extra interest for visitors to this place is the inclusion of Guld’s DragonBall-influenced Solid State Scouter. If you haven’t heard much of it yet, it’s slightly mad, twisted and surprisingly melodic – and seems to be a bit of a slow burner, it’s really become one of my favourites recently, having listened to it for a long while without being totally convinced. Anyway, great news for Guld, who has also seen Requiem get a recent release in Japan, and has just completed another crazed track – brace yourselves for that one.

Micken – Demo Mix 2008

Yet another new mix, this one from Canadian dark freeform artist Micken. Although he’s been a bit quiet recently, now we know why – this mix has got a few new tunes soon to be released on Kreatrix and Electronica Exposed. Retribution and Rainforce are both excellent, and the mix itself is very well planned, with some unexpected/original track choices keeping things interesting…I was especially surprised at how well Lost Soul’s track fits into a ‘real’ dark freeform mix.

Kreatrix Volume 5: Japanese Edition

Here’s a very interesting next release in the Kreatrix series, the ‘Japanese Edition’. This time a few of the newer artists on the Finnish scene are featured, as well as Twisted Freq himself. Although some might conceivably complain about the number of remixes and originals on one CD, I actually think this isn’t a bad idea at all – it’s always interesting to hear how an artist has messed around with/improved on the original, and my experiences of freeform remixes so far are that most artists are creative enough not to simply slap a breakbeat on top of everything, and then call it a day.

One of the tracks here is effectively a ‘remix of a remix’, Exaltation Reborn (Cyrez and Sam One remix). The original Exaltation (by Level 13) is an absolute classic, so this and Twisted Freq’s new version are probably the tunes I’m looking forward to most. Having said that, I’ve been waiting for Usurper for a very long while now, and Reboot the System and Acid World are also great tracks… An honourable mention to Horzi too, what with Still Alive and Life For Freedom (with Alchemiist) being his first Kreatrix releases.
Better Tomorrow is being absolutely caned by freeform DJs at the moment, so I’ve got high hopes for these, too.
