Amazing work here from Epyx, who has put together an awesome video to mark the upcoming release of Unohdetut 2012. The track itself is sounding great, and works really well with some nicely edited footage of the guys in the club and studio.
Almost a week since the last post, and as luck would have it quite a lot has happened lately. First of all, here’s what must be one of the tunes of the year – Proteus’ Get Fire! This is a truly fabulous track that brings back memories of old FINRG releases, while still keeping that modern Proteus feel. Check out the oldskool Carbon Based-style sounds towards the end of the preview…It’s already scheduled for release on Watchtower, the excellent new label that will be launching very soon. Stay tuned for more info!
Transcend’s upcoming remix of Seismic Activity is actually the first in a series of remixes for Substanced’s album, When the World Collapses. This is a perfect choice for a UK-style remix, and Transcend has done a great job making the most of that catchy main melody.
Stay alert for more previews – there are some potentially amazing tracks under construction.
Another non-freeform post, but one of my main inspirations this past year has been Romanian Goa artist E-Mantra, particularly his incredible Arcana. Earlier this month saw the release of his second album through Suntrip, and while on a first listen through the tracks (Metamorphic Resonance is up the top there) Pathfinder doesn’t match the brooding atmosphere of Arcana, there’s some excellent stuff in there, including a couple of fantastic downtempo tunes.
I’ll be ordering a copy asap – check out the Suntrip site for more info (plus a very tasty-looking E-Mantra/Artifact303 showcase set that I haven’t had time to download yet).
Time for another chiptune-styled interlude from Byproduct, with more of the excellent melodies that we’ve come to expect. Cybersynthesis is an original track, but well up to the standards of his past OST remixes. Nice to hear the guitar being integrated so smoothly into the tune, too.
I didn’t have time to post about Alchemiist’s newest freeform track at the start of the week, but here it is for anyone who missed it. Stunning stuff this time, building on the excellent original with some properly dark leads and a very original structure. Still under construction, this is really a tune to be on the lookout for…
Substanced has released some promising previews of his upcoming album recently, including Reptile Zoo, a nice blend of Finnish nastiness and the more UK-style melodies he sometimes uses these days. Once again the production is already first class, with some awesome sounding synths in that filtered midsection.
Anyone who follows mixu’s (aka pocketpool1000) YouTube channel might have noticed already, but there’s an extra artist name floating around from now on. PlasmaDancer was never even supposed to be a DJ name, and so for a while now I’ve been planning on using something else for any tracks I manage to come up with. Listening to the edit of my Hell’s Gate remix the other day, I decided that it’s just about dark enough to warrant the first use of my alias, Afagddu.
I’ve been reading Welsh myths for inspiraton for a while now (I already have a few unfinished tracks with a variety of unpronounceable Welsh names), and decided on Afagddu as it derives from the ancient Welsh for ‘utter darkness’. The whole story behind this pleasant fellow can be found on the Celtic knot-tastic Nemeton, while Beezee might be the only Horser with an idea of how to pronounce it – in Welsh one ‘f’ makes a ‘v’ sound, while ‘dd’ is more like ‘th’.
That makes it the most horrendous word imaginable for Japanese speakers, but I’ll still be PlasmaDancer for everything here/when DJing, so it’s not as if we’ll be seeing it often…
Anyway, many thanks to mixu for the upload – I still have some space on my PlasmaDancer SoundCloud account, so a wav version will be online to download sometime this week.
Just a quick post today (more to come tomorrow, though), for those who haven’t seen mixu’s recent upload of another older Epilim track. You can really hear the influences from hardcore, trancecore and early freeform in Windup – once again it must have been well ahead of its time, and is still a nice example of how doing the simple things well can make a great track.
Amini’s back already with another new track, this time a pacy freeform tune that’s very much in the Substanced mould. I love the filters in this one, especially after the breakbeaty interlude, and the all-round quality really is high enough for it to pass for one of Substanced’s own. Amini’s on a roll now, let’s hope he can keep it going.
