All the video has finally been uploaded, so let’s take a look at what went on at the last NRGetic Romancer. This one was very special, with the 6th Anniversary the reason for a massive collaboration between Romancer, ever free and Adrenaline. It ended up being the event of the year so far, with a brilliant mixed crowd that really went for all the different styles being played.
As for me, it was probably my best set of the year too, maybe because I just went all out with a high bpm right from the start. The timing of the event worked out perfectly too, with some absolutely amazing tracks being completed just in time. We’ve got quite a lot of video this time from Soham, Kaz-B and my pixellated mess of a camera, so click below to check them all out.
I opened the event again, but this time decided that there would be no messing around with a build-up to the harder tracks. I suppose it was a bit of a gamble, but luckily the crowd not only arrived in force really early, but danced away to what was probably my hardest opening to a set so far. Massive thanks to Eirik and friends, Zan, Krys, KANGU, Mai, Akibakei and the rest of the crew for making the atmosphere such a great one. Set-related thanks this time to Nomic, Aryx, Epyx & Cyrez, Heathen and Dye In Sound.
01. Anomic – Unclear Room
02. Alek Szahala – Man Eaten
03. Epyx & Cyrez meets Heathen – All of Us
04. Proteus & DJ X – Full Metal Jacket
05. DJ Rx – Liberator
06. Aryx – Aurora
07. Alek Szahala – Voices of Babylon
08. Sonic – Inside the Ride
09. Dye In Sound – The Storyteller
10. Epyx & Cyrez – When Left Alone
I’ve been wondering whether or not to post up this tracklist, as I’m so happy with a couple of the combinations – the first four tracks will almost definitely end up in a future studio mix together. Overall, the idea was to play dark and nasty, with a bit of an Alek Szahala feel without overusing the classics. Liberator and Aryx’s amazing Aurora fitted the bill perfectly then, and as for All of Us…it’s a phenomenal piece of work, right up there as a possible ‘tune of 2010’. Never mind the event, it did enough damage during the pre-event sound check! No video from the set again, but thanks to Kaz-B for the blurry-yet-cool photo at the top, and to SiSeN for the photo of me and Siki.
Talking of Siki, it’s a real shame that we don’t have any video from her set…she brilliantly picked up from where When Left Alone finished, playing some high bpm dark psy that really kept the crowd going. Last time I saw her (at Kanon’s Illegrrrls) she played a lot slower, so full marks to her for matching the set to the audience this time.
I owe Cogi an apology – no video for about the millionth time. I’ll definitely get some next month, and let’s see if some of these sets can be recorded, too. Anyway, he was on top form as usual, with a new batch of promos from around the dark psy world and the kind of mixing that still sets him apart from the rest of us. This time he made a lot of use of the effects on the new Cube mixer, something he usually stays away from, but it worked very well.
We obviously haven’t reached the point in the night when I turned on my camera, as there doesn’t seem to be any footage of Kaz-B’s set, either. No surprises though, he went for massive gabber anthems that never fail to get the floor going. Maybe it wasn’t quite the time for some of the really huge tunes, but it was undoubtedly a really fun set.
Next up were Full Circle DJs, with a pretty amazing improvised set. For one reason or another we didn’t have record decks set up this time, leaving Buzzmasta and Yousuke to rummage through the few CDs they had brought along. It turned out to be a 50/50 set of UK hardcore and drum and bass, never easy genres to mix together, but they managed it with hardly a worry, even in their trademark b2b style (using one CDJ each). This clip above is a good example of what went on, and credit to them for getting the crowd to dance to some of the more challenging dnb tunes.
Following Full Circle DJs was TETRA with yet more dark psy. Cogi was knocked out by this set, and wouldn’t stop the praise for the rest of the night. Even to a psy beginner like me it was an awesome set – heavy on the dark atmosphere and at just the right bpm, she tailored it perfectly to fit in with the Romancer style.
Cyber goth legend SiSeN was up next, playing a slightly faster version of his usual industrial. It was a bit of a step down, bpm-wise, but his stage presence alone made sure that the crowd gave it a good go. I’ve always been a fan of his super-extreme style, so it was great to finally play the same event together.
Betwixt & Between’s 30 minute set was as good as ever, with a focus on his newer material. I suppose you would call it ‘dancefloor’ freeform rather than ‘dark’ or ‘evil’ these days, but the variety is amazing. The first clip up above features the new Rebuild track, Inexistenz, while the second has the whole of Point of No Return and Enter The Void. He did sneak in Skybreak and the must-play Zusammengehorigkeit though, nicely keeping the connection to his older stuff.
Following Betwixt was Takuya Angel, someone else I’ve wanted to see play for a long time now. It’s hard for anyone to follow 30 minutes of non-stop anthems, but Takuya worked his way into a very technical industrial set that went down very well with the crowd. He’s definitley one of the scene’s good guys, so it was nice to see him getting a good reception from the Romancer crew.
Guld finished things off with a quality set of NRG anthems. The mixing was spot on this time, and all the classics came out to a top response from the crowd. The video above features Android Lime’s Sunray remix, which seems to be Guld’s tune of the year and has gained instant anthem status here. The rest of the set was light on freeform, but had plenty of newer material from Proteus (including Fist of the North Star and Psychopath), maybe a good choice with the decent number of industrial fans in the crowd. After an encore of Final Revenger, the event was over.
Massive congratulations to Guld for taking Romancer to the 6th Anniversary milestone, especially in what has been a pretty quiet year for the scene. Thanks go to all the ever free crew for really making the event a good one, and for bringing along such an open-minded crowd. Even the massive number of DJs worked well this time, with a new style to dance to every 30 minutes or so it was impossible to get bored.
Here’s hoping for another quality event next month, the last of 2010.
Glad to hear your set went down well Plasmadancer. And thanks for including the vids! It’s fun to hear some samples of what’s being played.

Awesome, awesome event (and post, too).
Your set had a lovely tracklist, I agree with the ‘future studio mix’ part. :p
And let’s hope NRGetic Romancer lasts another 6 years, so I can meet you all at least once. :]
