Gaiaforce – Formless Infinity by Gaiaforce
Time to welcome another DJ into the group – none other than TYFTH crew member, Gaia! He’s been kind enough to let me know about his debut set, and I’m posting it up here as a very promising taste of things to come. I’m not sure many of us were brave enough to put our first ever freeform set online (Yamanote was my third, I think), but this one’s a really good effort.
Most of the connections could have used a little nudging one way or the other to get them nicely into line (nothing catastrophic, mind), but the final sequence of Pahus, Invoker, and Deus is absolutely fine, and works really well selection-wise, too. Another nice mix is the Lucia – Lush connection, quite a nice/suprising crossover there. As for the less successful side of things, the opening reminded me why I always start playing Aurora after the first ‘mini-break’ – utterly awesome the tune may be, but the intro can start to drag if you’re not mixing it with something else. Dryad Machine – Frozen Flame would probably have benefitted from a sneaky early fade out, but it’s great to see someone taking on the challenge of a nice long mix.
With this kind of tracklist and some of the more adventurous connections towards the end, the signs are there that Gaia(force) is definitely on the right track – the mixing and the ‘when to use which tune’ spider sense will only get better from now on, after all.
01 Cyrez & Nightforce – Endstille
02 Aryx – Aurora
03 DJ Noriken – Lucia
04 Pain on Creation – Lush
05 Alek SzΓ‘hala – Dryad Machine
06 DJ Rx – Frozen Flame
07 Substanced – Aquarius
08 Grimsoul – Pahus
09 Betwixt & Between – Invoker
10 Alabaster – Deus
Thanks for posting this. Yes, it’s my first mix and it’s not all to impressive, but it wasn’t meant to be, anyway. Doing something until the end is the best way to improve, I think.
Thank you for your criticism. It’s very good to hear which things are fine and which can be done better. Constructive criticism is a way more helpful than any compliments.
I’ve truly underestimated the challenge of picking tracks worth of 60 minutes and planning a proper tracklist with good connections.
Anyway, while having in mind, which things can be done better, I’m already gathering passion for the next freeform mix. It’s very ejoyable.
Looks awesome!
I know from experience you can mix Dryad Machine too early…. Theres an odd break that is 3 bars long. Completely fucks up your mix out if you try to mix through it! lol
I understand your passion for wanting to do more. The only problem with Freeform is: Once you’ve done 4-5 mixes you start to run out of fresh tunes… I tend to do what you did, a tasty mixture of older and newer. There are many many tunes that i’ve kept ‘secret’ in reserve for the right time to use them, the only problem is – There isn’t enough new shit for me to put together a new mix as often as i’d like π
I’ll give it a listen to and see what i can say about it π Looks astounding though!
will have a listen later matey when i finish work, tracky looks ace, youll get there in the end with your mixing and selection, strangely i find the less i plan my sets the better it fits together, maybe thats just a fluke tho lol, ive only ever done 4 freeform mixes in my life as only started playing it last year, i started out on the trance many moons ago then progressed up the BPMs lol, ill leave you some feedback once ive listenned to it though buddy π
Did you encode this mix as VBR? How odd….
You didnt fall for the same trick i did the first time i mixed Dryad Machine… Good stuff man. Avoiding that break is the best thing you can do!
you ever mixed dbd – blackout, chip? same damn shit happens in that, after one of the breaks the beat comes in half a second too soon, throws it out every time lol, you need super quick reactions to get that one in lol
Yeah ofc i have :)And i know EXACTLY what your on about lol! I know people that mix ‘on the second beat’ for reasons exactly like that… Que it up on the second beat and drop it on the second beat. Don’t need so much reaction time then π
Oh and on the note of your first freeform mix uploaded, Survival of the Fittest was my second, Freeformensaudi was my third π
Tracklist looks tasty as hell. I definitely going to dl this.
But now I wonder, there’s only me left to try a set. D:
lol BerN.
Putting all of the Szahala tunes doesnt count as a creative set by the way! π Hahahahaha
ololol no shit
Although I’ve heard and got all the tunes in this mix I must say i really enjoyed it to be honest. So fuck of a few of the tracks needed a nudge, nobody ever makes a perfect mix and for a first effort it’s excellent. Well done Gaia! I may post my mix first mix up on here one day…. Hardcore…. Recorded back in…. Wait for it… 1998. Yes I’m old
Gaia
Actually, I’d say it’s really impressive! Along with your trance set it’s your first ever mix, and as Alderz said you’ve made an excellent start π
BerN
I was thinking just the same…time to get on the case with your first set, then π
Alderz
Mixing hardcore back in 98?
Respect where it’s due, sir!
(Luckily) I don’t have any of my old trainwrecked jungle sets on this computer, but I found the set-before-Yamanote the other day, mixed at the end of 2006…that could go online one of these days, I suppose.
just had a listen now mate and youre definitely going in the right direction, great tracklist (which is half the battle imo)think you could have done with shuffling about the position of a couple of the tunes is the only thing id say really but youll get used to structuring sets and youll start knowing when and where to pick tunes as you progress. thumbs up though buddy top effort π
