UK

Sorry the posts are a bit sporadic at the moment – I’ve been away for a couple of days, and there’s also some behind-the-scenes stuff going on that’ll hopefully result in a few things this week.

In the meantime, thanks to Stray for letting me know about a new forum dedicated to freeform. Since the FINRG homepage went into hybernation the harder/deeper freeform scene has lacked an English-language forum, so this could really be worth supporting. I’ll be signing up, and we might even get a few new recruits to TYFTH, who knows..

I often think about starting up a forum here too, especially with some recent comment sections/ustream sets turning into epic conversations between a few people…any thoughts?

This one passed me by a couple of months ago, but a new set from Alabaster is always welcome. Coming via Deep Sea, this was one of Alabaster’s recent ustream live sets, heavy on the cheerful UK hardcore and hard dance. Don’t be fooled by the dark opening (the ever-excellent Storm), as the rest of the set is very main-floor friendly with some harder tracks thrown in to keep the interest up. There’s some nice mixing here – the so-crazy-it-works combination of Super Mario and Hellboy stood out for me the first time around.

Take a look at the tracklist, and download here.

01. Pain On Creation & E-NRG – Storm
02. Dave Curtis – Awesome (Original Mix)
03. Manik – Skywalker
04. Kipster – Through The Portal
05. Steve Hill Vs Technikal – Impulse
06. BRK3 – C4ut1on
07. Organ Donors – Super Mario
08. Lab4 – Hellboy
09. DJ Gammer – Ambient Angels
10. Lost Soul – Dark Side Of The Moon (K Complex & Mark Ashley Remix)
11. Breeze & Kevin Energy – The Pendulum of Bass
12. Alabaster – Acid Maker
13. Synthwulf – Every Soul
14. Eryk Orpheus – Really Nasty
15. S3RL – Mozart On Crack
16. Sharkey, Eryk Orpheus & Kevin Energy – Hit Ya Hard
17. Shanty, Tazz & Concept – The Prophecy

Lab-4 – Concept of Love (GULD Remix) by FINRG Recordings

Guld recently uploaded a preview of his new Concept of Love, giving you a good idea of the pre/post breakdown sequence that did such damage (in preview form) at the last NRGetic Romancer. Following the recent re-release of his Unhola remix on Hybridize, it looks as though this will be Guld’s first release on FINRG – no news on when just yet, but the track itself is now 100% complete. It’s now released, and downloadable via the updated SoundCloud link above.

London Helsinki Underground – Proteus 2011 ‘Warcry’ Remix Preview by Proteus Official

To mark the final release on Nu-Energy, Proteus is dusting off the classic London Helsinki Underground for a heavy-on-the-acid remix. I’ve listened to the preview a few times now, and it seems to me like one of those deceptive tunes that might not sound like a must-play at first, but would really work brilliantly in the right set. Definitely bodes well for the rest of the Nu-Energy 100 compilation, too…

Sorry to bunch up the posts again, but here’s some of the stuff that another brutal week has stopped me talking about until now…

First of all, let’s keep the unbroken chain of mixes going with TYFTH regular Alderz’ very danceable Goa set. This one definitely leans more towards the mainstream, with some very catchy tunes that don’t seem a million miles away from commercial trance. I wasn’t too keen on tunes like the opening Altiga, but the set really gets into its stride in the middle section, even if it lacks the darker/deeper atmosphere of the new/old style material released on Suntrip Records.

Thanks to Aldz for letting us know about the set – I’ve already given it a couple of listens, and in the middle of all this freeform it’s definitely a nice change of pace (and nicely mixed too, I should add).

  1. Krunch – Altiga
  2. Earthing – Mystical
  3. Ovnimoon – Open 3rd Eye
  4. Wizzy Noise – Oceanica
  5. Domestic – Bloom On Day
  6. Etic – Wishes
  7. Wizzy Noise – Dreaming Machines
  8. Digital Tribe – On Time
  9. DNA vs Wizzy Noise – Restart
  10. Save the Robot – Off the Assembly Line
  11. Quadra – Chase the Sun
  12. Ultravoice vs Asax Syndrome – Ultrazax
  13. Jay Selway & Magnus – Stronghold

Custom Built DJs – The Free of Form Show Mix May 2011 by Custom Built DJs

Yet another mix to check out, this time a Free of Form set from Custom Built DJs. I must confess that I haven’t heard much CB material before, but some of the tracks are very promising, even reminiscent of some of Epyx & Cyrez’s Electronica Exposed releases. The first half is pretty much a Custom Built showcase, but after Noriken’s Fighting for Freed…sorry, Lucia, things take a deeper melodic turn with Aquarius, Aurora and Astraia.

I can think of a few DJs here who might find room in their sets for a CB tune or two, while for everyone else it might be nice to hear something a bit different to what we’re used to on TYFTH.

1. Epyx & Cyrez – Twisted Faith (Cyrez 2010 Edit)
2. Custom Built DJs – Going Down
3.Custom Built DJs – The Journey
4. Custom Built DJs – U Sure Do
5. Custom Built DJs – Fear of Conciousness
6. Custom Built DJs – Revenge with Honour
7. Sam One – Hypnotize
8. DJ Noriken – Lucia
9. Substanced – Aquarius
10. Aryx – Aurora
11. Alek Szahala – Astraia

BEEZEE – CERBERUS by BEEZEE

Following up Substanced’s set, here’s BEEZEE with another belter of a mix. This one has a really good improvised-in-a-good-way feel to it, with a slightly tougher edge and some interesting newer selections – thanks to the man himself for including Aerobiosis and Leadbeater, and it’s great to hear Hybridize classics like Blind Faith and Polyhedra again. I couldn’t help thinking what a missed opportunity Deep Space was…that’s a really well done breakdown, it’s a shame that the rest of the tune doesn’t really match up to it. A Finnish remix could be something special…

Anyway, this is another recommended old/new set – support a Horser and get on the download ASAP.

1. SYNTHWULF – ANALOG RUSH
2. LOST SOUL – THE ANSWER
3. ALCHEMIST – AEROBIOSIS
4. SUBSTANCED – DREAM OF YOU
5. ENDEMIC + SOLUTION – OUTBREAK (RX MIX)
6. ALCHEMIST + JMX – LEADBEATER
7. LOST SOUL FEAT. DARK ANGEL – DEEP SPACE
8. MOZZ + THUMPA – TECHNO CONTROL
9. DOUGLAS FEAT. RHONA – FM220
10. HORZI – BLIND FAITH
11. BETWIXT + BETWEEN – INEXISTENZ
12. EPYX + CYREZ – POLYHEDRA 08

I gave this set a listen a few days ago, and as you’d expect from Substanced, it’s another nice collection of uplifting/melodic freeform. As usual with these UK-style sets there are a few tunes I’m not too familiar with (as well as some real classics), but it’s all tied together with some new Finnish tunes, including Substanced’s recent Aphrodite and Shadows of Tomorrow. Invitation is also here, and isn’t it amazing how it still seems on another level to most other stuff, quality-wise? A set well worth a download, then – hit kuuntele over on the Klubitus page.

  1. Transcend – So Obsessed
  2. Nick 235 – Fundamental Darkness
  3. Substanced – Aphrodite
  4. A.B – Outburst
  5. Nish – Sagittarius (Kors K Remix)
  6. Douglas – FM-200
  7. Eufeion – Megaman Blast
  8. Substanced – Shadows of Tomorrow
  9. Kevin Energy & Dj Rx – Translate Replicate
  10. Sc@r – Defiance
  11. Lost Soul ft. Dark Angel – Sacrifice
  12. Alek Szahala – Invitation
  13. Kevin Energy – Veti Levu

One of the great things about being involved in such a small scene is that one person can, with a bit of hard work/motivation/talent, have a really important part to play in the direction the music takes. DJing’s one thing, but we wouldn’t have a scene at all if it wasn’t for the producers, so here’s the first part in what might be a little series of tips from some of the best up-and-coming artists around.

This definitely isn’t meant to be a reference for established freeform folk – instead the idea is to give some of the TYFTH crew some absolutely entry-level beginner’s tips on the kind of stuff I always wondered (and often still wonder) about. A few people here have talked about producing one day, or taken some very early steps, so this might be another little motivating push in the right direction.

This time around there are tips from Aryx, Substanced and Matt England – enormous thanks to all three for coming up with some brilliant stuff, I’m really grateful. If you haven’t checked it out already, the video at the top of the post is a guided tour through Aryx’s TYFTH ‘release’, Galaxis, and is an awesome introduction to both Reason’s interface and Aryx’s production style.

BEEZEE – LAB 4 TRIBUTE HOUR by BEEZEE

A busy few days have kept me away from music, but my usual Tokyo-Yokohama train ride finally gave me a chance to check out BEEZEE’s new set. It’s a run through of most of Lab 4’s classic tracks, getting all the way up to 170bpm by the end. There might not be anything new to you here, but that’s to be expected in a tribute set – well done to BEEZEE on some quality selection and mixing. If you haven’t listened to Lab 4 for a while this’ll definitely do the business.

2. Groove overdrive (Turbo Charge 2005 mix)
3. Gangstah
4. Requiem (Metatron hard mix)
5. Nue messiah
6. Candyman
7. Uprising
8. Contact London
9. 4 those about 2
