Mixes

My mp3 player recently survived a deep-sea adventure in the washing machine, so I’ve once again been able to while away the hours on the train by checking out some new (and not-so-new) mixes. I thought it might be worth collecting them all together in one post – and if anyone happens to know of any other ‘must-listens’, maybe you could add a comment? There seems to be a lot of freeform/NRG mixes around at the moment, so maybe this kind of round-up could become a regular thing (or as regular as my slack updating will allow, anyway).

The first mix is Android Lime’s Alien Autopsy Promo, which Guld recommended to me a while ago, and it’s easy to see why – this one’s dark and thumping all the way, and heavily weighted towards Adam Lab 4/DJ X/Proteus-style tracks. Anyway, it progresses really well, and takes a welcome turn for the more melodic towards the end of the mix – a nice touch, I reckon.

The next mix is Sam One’s FINNISH 2008 HARDTRANCE SET (click ‘Kuuntele’ to download). I’ve heard a few of Sami’s tunes on the Finrg Forum, but didn’t realise he’d already got enough for a solo artist mix like this. Even more surprising was the high standard of all the tunes – his melodies are really great in an uplifting-trance-but-still-NRG style.

Here’s a mix I should have posted earlier – DJ Yousuke’s set from this month’s NRGetic Romancer. Definitely one of his best so far; how he gets so much variety into a set, while making it flow so well, I’ll never know.

DJ Rx recently posted up the Rx vs Alek Szahala live set from last year’s Hakkapelitta Tour, and it’s a stormer, as you’d expect. In my too-picky opinion, the set doesn’t flow as well as it might have done with a few different track choices, but then that’s not the point of ‘vs’ sets, is it? Instead, this is a showcase of some of the best tunes that the two of them have to offer, and so you simply must give this one a listen.

Another that I forgot to mention is Girdler Synthetic’s recently posted Energize freeform mix. Some classic oldies on this one are mixed up with newer tunes from Alek Szahala, Epyx & Cyrez, A.M.S etc – well worth checking out, the combinations are very original. The opening few tracks are great choices, too.

I’ll wait for the photos to arrive before I write up the usual NRGetic Romancer piece, but here’s the flyer I picked up on Saturday night – I’d completely forgotten that NRGetic Romancer has been going for a full 4 years now. To celebrate, Guld is bringing over dark NRG supremo DJ X, which should be fantastic. I have to admit I was hoping for some Finnish artists too, but still, this is another great event in the making. As long as the attendance is up from last weekend, that is – but that’s another story…

By the way, no Top Tens for the time being (I’m sure you’ll miss them desperately), as I’m sorting out the tracks for the next mix. Maybe I’ve decided on 60-70% of the tunes so far, but I want to have a bit more of a structure in mind before I start throwing them together…it might be a while until it’s ready, in other words.

edit: I wrote this post a bit too quickly, and forgot to mention that there’s a present waiting for those who make it to August’s NRGetic Romancer – a 4th Anniversary DVD! No details about it yet, but sounds very interesting…

Another event that’s quite some way off, but definitely worth postponing the summer holiday for. The Bootek series of CDs are, as you might imagine, generally schranz/techno/hard house bootlegs of older tunes (one of which, Underworld’s Born Slippy, was played by Zio at an NRGetic Romancer not so very long ago), and the purpose of this event is to showcase some of those releases.

Anyway, aside from the Bootek Showcase and Mix CD ‘present’ for 100 lucky folk, the line-up at this one really is something. Headliners are Nish and Munetica/Stripe, but Remo-con, Overflow and our man Guld are all playing too. If that wasn’t enough (and not even noted on the flyer), DJ Yousuke and Buzzmasta are playing on the second (‘Hardcore’) floor.

Before you say anything, I’m not only giving this a shout because there are two Japanese tunes included – this is simply a great mix, and (in my opinion) Decion’s best so far. The tracklist (as you’ll see below) is fantastic, and flows very well, rather than just being a list of cool-but-not-related-to-each-other promos. Kudos to Decion for including Hase/Psyfix’s Void of Farthest, a very hard tune to mix well, I think. The other Japanese track is Betwixt & Between’s classic City of Solitude, a great example of insanely hard old-style Betwixt. Anyway, other highlights are Nomic’s The Last Breath, and Tyranoid/Strongstream/Substanced’s Still Hope? Highly recommended.

1. Tyranoid / Strongstream & Substanced – Still Hope?
2. Twisted Freq – Hanuman Visits Lanka ( Epyx & Cyrez Remix)
3. Alek Száhala – Iron Squid
4. Cyrez & Substanced – Cry For The Pain
5. Nomic – The Last Breath
6. Substanced & Horzi & Sam one – Lionheart
7. Nomic – Desolated Dreams
8. Hase & Psyfix – Void of Farthest
9. Nightforce & Substanced – Operation Stardust
10. Betwixt & Between – City of Solitude

Much much later than intended, but here is the fantastic Full Circle DJs Live PA from the NRGetic- Romancer-before-last. Strangely, the original link seems to have disappeared, so I’ve fallen back on trusty old Mediafire for now. There are a couple of newer tunes here (as I mentioned back in the original post), but this is the live PA itself, without Buzzmasta’s percussion or Yousuke’s guitar. Still, a great set – and if you haven’t heard it before, look out for Edge, it’s still one of my favourite Full Circle tunes. There could well be some more news to come soon re. the new Full Circle album, the brilliantly titled Psychadelic New Rose – it’s definitely a release to look out for.

Anyway, here’s the Live PA tracklist:

  1. Full Circle DJs – Ouroboros
  2. Full Circle DJs – Gate Crasher
  3. Buzzmasta – For Action (Full Circle DJs remix)
  4. Full Circle DJs – Edge
  5. DJ Rx – Hellfire (Full Circle DJs remix)
  6. Full Circle DJs – Halcyon
  7. Full Circle DJs – Things Past

Zio was busy mixing last night, once again on the Stickam networking site – but this time he invited anyone interested to join him for a chat while he mixed. In the end, a decent little group gathered – including yours truly, DJ Silver and Nightforce, among others. Although the chat mostly consisted of oohs and ahhs every time Zio mixed in an Alek track, it was very good fun, and great to be talking to other freeform fans and the DJ himself while listening to a very very nice set.

Zio could well be busy for the next week or so, and sets might be slightly thin on the ground until after Golden Week (next week). Be sure to check out his profile now and then – and if he happens to be playing live, try clicking on the ‘magnifying-glass-with-a-plus-in-it’ icon to start chatting. Of course, as it’s a Japanese site, English might not be spoken by everyone, so it might be worth dusting off the Japanese phrase book if you fancy paying a visit.

Here’s some very exciting news for folk living outside Japan (or outside Tokyo, even) – Zio has started to DJ live online! For various reasons he has been forced to pull out of NRGetic Romancer for a few months now, and so aside from the mid-week (until now!) Hell’s Gate it has been increasingly difficult to hear his sets.

Tuesday saw the first of his practice sets, using the Stickam social networking site. If Zio happens to be playing, the sound should be broadcast immediately, so no need to randomly click on Japanese options, thankfully. Of course, as it’s live, it might be slightly hit-and-miss whether you catch a set/practice session or not (Tuesday saw him play an hour or so, from about 1.30am Japan time), but if he has something more concrete planned, I’ll be sure to post the times up here.

Recently Zio has morphed from the Alek Szahala of Japan into something of a Hardstyle-head, but his practice mix still managed to fit in some dark NRG and freeform (including The Sanctuary and Lagas). He even mixed from Lagas into a Hardstyle tune (!) – and ridiculously it sounded quite good, believe it or not. So, keep an eye on Zio’s profile (and here, too) – hopefully there’ll be some more interesting sets on the way before too long at all.

Some other great Zio-related news is that the next Hell’s Gate is to be held on a Saturday! I was gearing up for a Wednesday event in Shibuya, but the 24th of next month (the day after your writer turns 27, distressingly) will be held at the home of NRGetic Romancer, Studio Cube. No news on the line-up (aside from Zio, hence the tidy new logo above), but plenty of time for that yet.

I got sidetracked last night, listening to some old Nookie tunes – but here’s something else I was definitely meaning to mention. Nightforce has been pulling out all the stops lately, and is soon to have a few new tunes released on Nu-Energy. Here he has combined his older releases on Electronica Exposed and Kreatrix with the newer tracks, in a really nice showcase of his producing range.

Look out for the first two tunes, both Japanese-inspired (the second by anime mech-fest Gundam), although if you haven’t heard them before the seamless (seamless, I tell you) mix between the two might make distinguishing them tricky. The other tracks are more familiar, but work really well together in a set. Also worth a mention is the fabulous ‘cover’ design and mix title. Highly recommended all round, then.

First of all, take a look over at Electronica Exposed, where you’ll notice the release date for Epyx & Cyrez’s Sleep Paralysis is set as March – and that the tracklists for the two (two!) CDs are very exciting indeed. What with all their releases so far, I was expecting a fair few of the tunes to be available elsewhere, but here we have an unmixed CD of almost completely unheard tracks. Among the many highlights are a couple of my favourites, Immaculate and Subida Del Muerto, as well as This Is The Way The World Ends and what seems to be a similarly warped, disturbing relative of Polar Energy, When Left Alone.

The mixed second CD is equally impressive, featuring great tunes such as Fragile Mind, Unohdetut, and Proteus’ current beau, Toivoton. A really impressive effort, this release definitely cements Epyx & Cyrez’s position up among the forerunners of the scene these days. Quite how they come up with so many tunes, so quickly, I’ve no idea – but long may it continue.

I’ll soon have the chance to find out whether my praise for Alek Szahala’s Tokyo set was down to post-event hyperbole or not, as those who make it to NRGetic Romancer on the 19th of next month will receive a promo CD of that mix. All for a mere 2500yen (with flyer/a bit of guestlisting) and a trundle around the Yamanote line? As long as 3 weeks back in Tokyo hasn’t bankrupted me, I’m sure I’ll be able to manage that.

The regulars are all present and correct for the next event, and I swear by the god of schranz that I’ll get there on time to hear Horny’s set. No flyer yet, but as the crew have all been jaunting around Japan for the last couple of weeks, that’s to be expected.
