Now that the mix is all finished, it’s about time for that long-delayed ustream session. Once again it’ll mostly be freeform, this time with a slightly earlier start time for any of the Japan crew who might be around. It’s been a while since the last one, so feel free to stop by and say hello!
Events
Nomic made an appearance at last weekend’s Harder.fi event, and thanks (as usual) to Syntse we’ve got some nice footage of the event. It says it all about the sorry state of the freeform scene that someone as talented as Nomic isn’t headlining a different event every week, but he’s only challenged by Betwixt & Between/Alek Szahala as my artist of the year so far.
Sorry to postpone another set, but I’m actually putting together a ‘studio mix’ in record time during this next week. I’ll say no more for now, but hopefully there’ll be a ustream session on the 23rd/24th, instead!
A couple of weeks have screamed past since the last ustream session, so here’s some early warning for the next one, this coming Sunday. It looks like the weekend is going to be completely eaten up by music-related stuff, but I’ll try to put some thought into this as a warm up for next month’s NRGetic Romancer.
Alek Szahala – sunray (ANDROID LIME remix) {UNFINISHED CLIP} by Android Lime
The forum preparation might be on pause at the start of this week, but here’s something a bit special for fans of the Production advice for beginners post from a couple of months back. Android Lime has very kindly agreed to answer any questions (beginner or otherwise) about Hard NRG production, and has even offered to put some of his answers on video to demonstrate what he’s talking about.
Plenty of potential for something really useful, then, and here’s where the Horsers step in – feel free to add any questions to the comments section at the bottom of this post, and I’ll send a selection off to Mr Lime towards the end of the week (let’s say Thursday lunchtime). I think Android is still a Logic fiend, but more general stuff would still be applicable to other software, so don’t let that hold you back!
On the spur of the moment I braved a trip to the armpit of Tokyo (aka Roppongi) last night, to check out a new Goa event. This one caught my eye with its 90s/oldskool Goa theme, and despite INDIGO being one of the smallest DJ bars I’ve ever seen, it was a fun event with a friendly crowd and some quality selections from the DJs.
I was a bit lost with the lineup (as was everyone else I asked), but recognised plenty of older tunes, and even some Filteria towards the end of the night. The guest DJ (SHIORI) played an unusual set of repetitive semi-Goa that was mixed really well, while the night also featured a couple of real veterans who were obviously around in the very early days. The video at the top of the post was taken in the middle of one of their sets (just after SHIORI), and gives a decent idea of the atmosphere, complete with the (deliberate) blackouts that came at the end of every tune…
A request from one of the Japan crew has made up my mind about whether or not to do a ustream set tonight, so there’ll be a Nomic-only show starting at the slightly earlier time of 11pm. I’ll try to throw in some stuff that you don’t hear so often, as well as some tracks from Anomic/Samuel K.
edit: Having messed around with some tunes this evening, I’d like to do a better Nomic-only set some other time, so tonight’ll be another improvised set (including a few Nomic tracks, of course).
As always, anyone else who happens to be around will be very welcome!
Last Saturday I was all set to go to this event, but once again my horrendous early weekday mornings caught up with me…
This clip is from Tsucchi’s set, no sign of Kanon just yet. Anyway, aside from the incongruous sight of waistcoated restaurant staff strolling past, it looks like they did a quality job of transforming the slightly-fancy Pasela into a proper club venue. Wonder if I’ll make the next one…

To mark the 10th anniversary of Happy Dynamite, the lineup will bring together DJs from every corner of the harder scene, in a similar style to the early hardcore events I hear so much about. I wasn’t here during that ‘golden era’ for hardcore in Tokyo, so this one-off event is an absolute must-see.

Right, just about to get started with a few tunes on ustream – I still don’t really know whether to begin with NRG or freeform, but there’ll be one or two new tracks either way!
Last week I foolishly mentioned that I might try to make a semi-regular thing of these Wednesday evening sessions, so I’ll be playing another set tomorrow night. Maybe starting off with the nasty NRG I didn’t use last week, I’ll also try to rustle up some less well-known tunes from the freeform back catalogue.
As long as I don’t fall asleep beforehand it’ll all start at 11.30pm! edit: Make that 11.30pm on Friday – I’m not feeling too good today, so an early night might be a better idea this time. Apologies for the last minute change, but hopefully there’ll be a few people around on the 17th!
