Thanks to AT I’ve just discovered that quite a lot of last weekend’s Chaotic Genesis (in Nagoya) was recorded via ustream. Sadly I can’t find any sign of AT himself, but here’s the opening of Taber’s NRG set, with a bit of Proteus, Guld and one of the maddest intros I’ve heard for a while. Another worth checking out is DJ MOE:T’s dark psy set, the video runs for the full hour, too.

Anyway, it sounds like the event went well, and what a great idea to broadcast it all. Hardcore Tano*C has also been doing something similar, so hopefully we’ll see more of this in the future…

Thanks to Cogi, Eirik and Soham, we’ve got plenty of photos and video to show what happened at last week’s NRGetic Romancer, even if my audio recording didn’t come out too well at all (I’ll know better next time, at least). The numbers were pretty respectable given what’s happened in the last month, so we should have raised a decent amount for people affected by the earthquake/tsunami.

There was plenty of variety too, with NRG, gabber, dark psy, drum and bass and hardcore all making an appearance this time around. The video at the top of the post shows Yumi and Soham glowing their way through TETRA’s (or maybe Cogi’s) set, but first up was Siki, also playing dark psy…

It’s scary how quickly this has come around again – Japanese club music magazine LOUD’s annual DJ Ranking. Despite the magazine itself being heavy on the funky house and gentle techno, Guld has managed to place very highly for the last couple of years now, so taking a couple of minutes to fill out the form might help him to do even better this time.

The fields marked with * are required, and in order they are:

– Name
– Date of birth (Year/Month/Day) and Chinese zodiac (a random guess will probably do fine)
– Email
– Email again
– No.1 DJ in Japan
– No1. DJ abroad

Yesterday Guld put his tracklist from last weekend’s Romancer online – it was another classy set, and its well worth checking out all the promos that were in there. I was actually recording on Saturday night, but (predictably) made a mess of the mic volume and a lot of the sets (including mine) are virtually unlistenable. I set it up during TETRA’s sound check though, so the dark psy DJs might have survived the recording a bit better, I haven’t had a chance to properly check yet.

It might not have mattered that much anyway, but sadly the recorder ran out of juice just before Guld’s set…you’ll just have to take my word for it that the work-in-progress remix of Concept of Love is already sounding awesome.

Check out the whole tracklist on Guld’s blog.

Ex-Funeral DJ Taber and Samurai-style Raver are about to launch the 2011 version of Chaotic Genesis, a dark/hard ‘raver festival’ that features a fair amount of freeform. Unusually, Taber is the only resident at the moment, with support coming from Destroyed High’s AT. The rest of the night’ll be the usual mix of dark psy, schranz and gabber, but CG deserves a big shout for pushing freeform at a time when a lot of DJs are moving into other genres.

I probably won’t be able to get to this one, but hopefully it’ll become a regular thing, and even build up the scene enough for Funeral to make a return, too.

Alek Szahala has just made a big update to his homepage, with a very nice redesign and some quality new additions. Most obvious is the recent Mayhem set from Australia – no tracklist/other info yet, as I’m just about to give it a listen while out and about for the afternoon.

edit: It’s easy to hear the effort that went into this one – it’s undoubtedly one of Alek’s best sets for a long time. Unlike some Live PAs, it flows really well, and there are so many edits in here that its an essential listen from start to finish.

Listen out especially for the stupendous new version of Ascend to the Stars that does exactly what I was hoping from the original (double edit: Ascend to the Stars was cut after the intro, so it’s actually a mystery second tune), a great version of Vertigo and a final tune that brings back ‘Thank you for the horse’! Well done to Alek, here’s the best I can do with the tracklist so far here’s his official tracklist:

01. Alek Szahala – Ascend to the Stars
02. Alek Szahala – Ziggurat (unfinished)
03. Alek Szahala – Astraia
04. Alek Szahala – Vertigo (unfinished)
05. Alek Szahala – Deimos
06. Alek Szahala – Maruuk
07. Alek Szahala – Voices of Babylon
08. Alek Szahala – Dryad Machine
09. Alek Szahala – Aurinko 2009
10. Alek Szahala – Iron Squid
11. Alek Szahala – Starcrossed (unfinished)
12. Mark Seibert – Erana’s Peace (Alek Szahala remix)
13. Scott Brown – Viroid (Alek Szahala’s made in hotel remix)

The redesign also does a fabulous job of integrating stuff from SoundCloud – I’ve been planning to do something similar with TYFTH when (if..?) my own SC gets sorted out, so that’s all very inspiring. Something else worth mentioning is the listing of Deimos in the upcoming releases for this year, it’s really good to see Alek getting back into the swing of things these days.

A couple of weeks ago Alek Szahala played at RESPAWN, an event in Brisbane, Australia. Thanks to BerN for unearthing this great video of the set, which looks like it was heavy on the psychedelic tracks (Brisbane has a reputation for being that way inclined, if I’m not mistaken).

Anyway, this video has given me a much-needed burst of inspiration before NRGetic Romancer tomorrow. I might be changing a few things around this evening…

I’ve finally got an afternoon free for set-constructing, so today I’ll be trying to decide on which newer tunes to play on Saturday (as well as remember what I was intending to use last month).

Anyway, here’s the rest of the timetable.

23:00 – SIki
23:50 – PlasmaDancer
00:30 – Kaz-B
01:00 – TETRA
01:30 – COGI
02:00 – Inugami
02:30 – Full Circle DJs
03:00 – Kanon
03:40 – Betwixt & Between
04:20 – GULD
