This took place yesterday afternoon in Roppongi’s Studio FORUM, it was another of the mainstream/harder combination events that seem to be cropping up here pretty regularly now. I was thinking about heading down there just to catch Minagi and KA-NA’s sets, but Sunday evening isn’t really the best time for me to be dancing myself into the ground…

A lot of the regular crowd made though, including Soham who took some really nice video through the afternoon/evening. Here I’ve concentrated on the harder DJs (minus Minagi, sadly), but check Soham’s YouTube profile too if you’re after some of the more sedate stuff.

First is KA-Na, by the way – that’s definitely the kind of bpm to play Full Metal Jacket! Follow the link for videos from Kanon and AEMI.

I should have mentioned this last week, but the voting is now open for LOUD magazine’s annual DJ ranking. You might remember that Guld ranked in 19th last year – it would be great to get him up there again, so if you have a couple of minutes to spare please check here for the voting form. It’s in Japanese again but most of it is pretty easy to guess. A quick run-through of the required fields, though:

Name

Sex (male/female)

Date of Birth (followed by starsign, I wouldn’t worry about that too much)

Email

Email again

No.1 DJ in Japan (then 2 and 3)

No.1 DJ outside Japan (then 2 and 3)

(the button on the bottom right is the one to confirm it all)

The Hard Dance Raver group have just completed their newest promo video, and it’s really worth a look as an introduction to some of the hardcore regulars in the scene here. They’ve got good taste, using Alanamra as the backing track, and there are a few new sequences that haven’t been seen before (including some from Romancer).

Guld is playing at this event in Asakusa later in the month, alongside other guest DJ Morphonics. I’m not familiar with any of the other artists, but apparently Morphonics has been around for a long time (previously under a different name though) and was a big influence on Cogi. I haven’t been to Asakusa for a while (and never to a club there), so I’m quite looking forward to this.

Been a long time since the last Top Ten, but there was talk of me playing another gig this month (it’s been delayed, but hopefully it’ll still happen at a later date) so that stopped me posting until now. Some very melancholy/emotional tunes in here this time, seems like this year I’ve really settled on the style I like best…

In other news I’ve got a couple of tunes on the go – one remix and one original. Really hoping I’ll have at least one of them done in a week or two, but we’ll see…

  1. Betwixt & Between – Point of No Return
  2. Alek Szahala – Voices of Babylon
  3. Steve Morley – Sacred City (Nomic remix)
  4. Alabaster – Revenant
  5. Apofish – Echiuridi
  6. Nomic – Desolated Dreams
  7. Betwixt & Between – From the Abyss
  8. Re-form – My Sickness
  9. Guld – Final Revenger (Another Future)
  10. RR – ThermalForce – Rockin’ (Phosphorescence mix)

Today’s random video at the top of the post is great, I reckon – genius vocalist/musician Bobby McFerrin conducting an audience through the pentatonic scale. With a million-and-something views you’ve probably seen it before, but I could watch this one all day… If you’re lucky enough not to have come across his shows on YouTube, definitely take some time to check them out – a few minutes ago I was watching this improvised duet with the ever-amazing Aziza Mustafa Zadeh.

I heard some talk the other day of Alabaster planning another studio mix, so in the meantime why not check out his Cradle to Grave promo set from last year? The tunes are all pretty familiar by now, but it’s always nice to hear a new angle on them. Head to the C2G mix page for the tracklist and download link.

I’m hoping to get a couple of other Japanese mixes posted on here in the not-too-distant future, too…
