Finnish

That’s right, 2004….this Rx vs Proteus set rip has been floating around on YouTube for a while now, and it’s too good not to post up here. I was still mixing whale-noise drum and bass back then, so I sometimes forget that anthems like Man Eaten and Caballo were already out, but here they are alongside some other classic oldies. A few of the tunes are really familiar, but I can’t remember many titles – can anyone help with a tracklist?

BEEZEE – CERBERUS by BEEZEE

Following up Substanced’s set, here’s BEEZEE with another belter of a mix. This one has a really good improvised-in-a-good-way feel to it, with a slightly tougher edge and some interesting newer selections – thanks to the man himself for including Aerobiosis and Leadbeater, and it’s great to hear Hybridize classics like Blind Faith and Polyhedra again. I couldn’t help thinking what a missed opportunity Deep Space was…that’s a really well done breakdown, it’s a shame that the rest of the tune doesn’t really match up to it. A Finnish remix could be something special…

Anyway, this is another recommended old/new set – support a Horser and get on the download ASAP.

1. SYNTHWULF – ANALOG RUSH
2. LOST SOUL – THE ANSWER
3. ALCHEMIST – AEROBIOSIS
4. SUBSTANCED – DREAM OF YOU
5. ENDEMIC + SOLUTION – OUTBREAK (RX MIX)
6. ALCHEMIST + JMX – LEADBEATER
7. LOST SOUL FEAT. DARK ANGEL – DEEP SPACE
8. MOZZ + THUMPA – TECHNO CONTROL
9. DOUGLAS FEAT. RHONA – FM220
10. HORZI – BLIND FAITH
11. BETWIXT + BETWEEN – INEXISTENZ
12. EPYX + CYREZ – POLYHEDRA 08

I gave this set a listen a few days ago, and as you’d expect from Substanced, it’s another nice collection of uplifting/melodic freeform. As usual with these UK-style sets there are a few tunes I’m not too familiar with (as well as some real classics), but it’s all tied together with some new Finnish tunes, including Substanced’s recent Aphrodite and Shadows of Tomorrow. Invitation is also here, and isn’t it amazing how it still seems on another level to most other stuff, quality-wise? A set well worth a download, then – hit kuuntele over on the Klubitus page.

  1. Transcend – So Obsessed
  2. Nick 235 – Fundamental Darkness
  3. Substanced – Aphrodite
  4. A.B – Outburst
  5. Nish – Sagittarius (Kors K Remix)
  6. Douglas – FM-200
  7. Eufeion – Megaman Blast
  8. Substanced – Shadows of Tomorrow
  9. Kevin Energy & Dj Rx – Translate Replicate
  10. Sc@r – Defiance
  11. Lost Soul ft. Dark Angel – Sacrifice
  12. Alek Szahala – Invitation
  13. Kevin Energy – Veti Levu

There’s not a huge amount going on at the moment, so here’s an unsigned classic from a few years ago that some might not have heard before. Cyanide Project has been (and still is) coming up with some great stuff, but Bloodlust has always been my favourite. I’ve quite often used the lower quality version in practice sets at home, but don’t want to risk it through a PA – what a shame that the 320kbps version seems to be extinct these days.

It’s a lovely tune, anyway – like some of the recent Dye In Sound material it’s short but sweet, and considering its age it still does a decent job of standing up to other tracks in a mix. Thanks to pocketpool (aka mixu) for the YouTube upload!

One of the great things about being involved in such a small scene is that one person can, with a bit of hard work/motivation/talent, have a really important part to play in the direction the music takes. DJing’s one thing, but we wouldn’t have a scene at all if it wasn’t for the producers, so here’s the first part in what might be a little series of tips from some of the best up-and-coming artists around.

This definitely isn’t meant to be a reference for established freeform folk – instead the idea is to give some of the TYFTH crew some absolutely entry-level beginner’s tips on the kind of stuff I always wondered (and often still wonder) about. A few people here have talked about producing one day, or taken some very early steps, so this might be another little motivating push in the right direction.

This time around there are tips from Aryx, Substanced and Matt England – enormous thanks to all three for coming up with some brilliant stuff, I’m really grateful. If you haven’t checked it out already, the video at the top of the post is a guided tour through Aryx’s TYFTH ‘release’, Galaxis, and is an awesome introduction to both Reason’s interface and Aryx’s production style.

Mark Seibert – Erana’s Peace (Alek Száhala Remix) by FINRG Recordings

Alek Szahala’s in fine form right now, following up the new Mayhem set with a FINRG release of his Erana’s Peace remix. It’s a really nice choice of track to reinterpret – personally I love the intro melodies/sequence around 3.59, but the whole tune seems very easy to fit into a set, and would probably work well with anything from Hard NRG to Tano*C-style J-core.

Re-form – Revenge by FINRG Recordings

Hats off to Re-form on this one – until I remembered the melody I thought that it might be a brand new track, but it’s actually from way back in 2004. Talk about ahead of their time! Last week I was this close to playing Sunstroke, another amazing Re-form tune from back in the day.

By the way, there’ll be two or three big posts coming up sometime this weekend, including a report on last Saturday’s Romancer.

Alek Szahala has just made a big update to his homepage, with a very nice redesign and some quality new additions. Most obvious is the recent Mayhem set from Australia – no tracklist/other info yet, as I’m just about to give it a listen while out and about for the afternoon.

edit: It’s easy to hear the effort that went into this one – it’s undoubtedly one of Alek’s best sets for a long time. Unlike some Live PAs, it flows really well, and there are so many edits in here that its an essential listen from start to finish.

Listen out especially for the stupendous new version of Ascend to the Stars that does exactly what I was hoping from the original (double edit: Ascend to the Stars was cut after the intro, so it’s actually a mystery second tune), a great version of Vertigo and a final tune that brings back ‘Thank you for the horse’! Well done to Alek, here’s the best I can do with the tracklist so far here’s his official tracklist:

01. Alek Szahala – Ascend to the Stars
02. Alek Szahala – Ziggurat (unfinished)
03. Alek Szahala – Astraia
04. Alek Szahala – Vertigo (unfinished)
05. Alek Szahala – Deimos
06. Alek Szahala – Maruuk
07. Alek Szahala – Voices of Babylon
08. Alek Szahala – Dryad Machine
09. Alek Szahala – Aurinko 2009
10. Alek Szahala – Iron Squid
11. Alek Szahala – Starcrossed (unfinished)
12. Mark Seibert – Erana’s Peace (Alek Szahala remix)
13. Scott Brown – Viroid (Alek Szahala’s made in hotel remix)

The redesign also does a fabulous job of integrating stuff from SoundCloud – I’ve been planning to do something similar with TYFTH when (if..?) my own SC gets sorted out, so that’s all very inspiring. Something else worth mentioning is the listing of Deimos in the upcoming releases for this year, it’s really good to see Alek getting back into the swing of things these days.

A couple of weeks ago Alek Szahala played at RESPAWN, an event in Brisbane, Australia. Thanks to BerN for unearthing this great video of the set, which looks like it was heavy on the psychedelic tracks (Brisbane has a reputation for being that way inclined, if I’m not mistaken).

Anyway, this video has given me a much-needed burst of inspiration before NRGetic Romancer tomorrow. I might be changing a few things around this evening…
