Events

Guld has announced the main floor timetable for Friday’s event, and a good job has been done fitting all 10 DJs into the evening. Once again I’m opening the event at 11pm – the upside of that is that I get a slightly longer set of 40 minutes. It’s probably safe to assume that anyone arriving in time for my set will want to hear freeform, so I’ll be going all out with a lot of promos at 170-175bpm.

Here’s the full lineup:

23:00 PlasmaDancer
23:40 Siki
00:20 COGI
00:55 Kaz-B
01:30 Full Circle DJs
02:10 TETRA
02:50 SiSeN
03:20 Betwixt & Between
03:50 TAKUYA
04:30 GULD

By the way, I’m also thinking about doing a USTREAM set on the 23rd (Saturday), where I could play my Romancer tunes plus anything else that couldn’t quite make it in there…

Last night was Injected with a Poison, the early-to-mid-90s rave/hardcore event, and it was just as much fun as I was hoping. It was the first time to hear a lot of these tunes through a PA (back in darkest Wales I had to rely on radio sets and mixtapes), and a lot of the DJs really put the effort in to come up with some nice sets. It’s amazing how easily the tunes from about 94 onwards still get the crowd going with no trouble at all, a kick drum over an amen still works a treat..

Only three videos though – DJ Shimamura and WILD PARTY both selected some brilliant tracks, but the sets were spoiled by some truly abysmal MCing. First clip up above is ASSHI playing Slipmatt’s classic Take Me Away, click down below for DJ 急行96 (kyuukou96)’s mic assisted stand-up comedy routine/DJ set and a clip of DJ CHAMP playing 95-96 hardcore.

It’s been a while since the last footage from Finland, so thanks to Syntse for this video of what looks like a quality lineup. Proteus vs Neon is always going to be a great set, but the main interest this time was surely the wonderful mother-daughter b2b of Nette and SuzuS – just one minute of YouTube is enough to show that they have perfect taste in tunes, and how nice it is to see them playing together.

Less than two weeks to go now until NRGetic Romancer, and we’ve got something pretty special for this year’s anniversary. Once again it’s a collab event with ever free, but instead of mostly gabber this time we’ve brought together some of the best dark psy and industrial DJs in the scene. I’m really excited that both SiSeN and Takuya Angel will be playing – I’ve often talked with Takuya about how different our DJ styles are, it’ll be good fun to compare them at the same gig, while TETRA, Siki and Kaz-B are all quality, too. As if that wasn’t enough, we also have another floor for Adrenaline’s schranz and hard techno.

Despite this being the quietest I’ve ever seen the freeform scene, I’ll be playing a few new tracks – it’s going to be dark/fast/hard this time!

A real treat for everyone today – thanks to BerN for unearthing this video of Alek Szahala playing a different version of Phobos and an unknown tune at Helsinki’s Assembly Summer 2009. Phobos is sounding a lot more developed here, with some lovely pads in the breakdown taking it even further into euphoric territory when the kick comes back in, while the ‘new’ track’s breakdown is just…well, take a listen for yourself.

The other three videos in this sequence feature Astraia and Maruuk, by the way.

Looks like the competition for ‘craziest event name in Tokyo’ is still ongoing, but look past that and this could be well worth a visit to Shibuya. HANKY PUNKY has been running since last year, and this time the organisers have managed to book both Guld and Eclipse’s DJ ni-21 to play alongside the rest of the lineup (including Morphonics, previously HASHIMOTO). Morphonics and ni-21 both played great sets at Eclipse a couple of months back, with plenty of schranz/hard techno/NRG in there.
