THC vs Twist turned out to be a really good event, and I’ve just finished uploading some videos. Still need a bit more practice, and could definitely do with an extra memory card or two, but hopefully you can get a decent idea of the atmosphere this time.
The turnout was very good, and it was nice to hear a variety of different sets from the Twist crew. I tried to check out as many as I could in between the usuals from THC. As I arrived WILD PARTY was finishing off his hardcore set, and next up was Twist’s JaQwa. The opening track started with deep subs and ambient pads, and I couldn’t believe it when it turned out to be an ambient dnb track in the style of Horizons. Following that was a classic mashed up amen track, and I was in absolute heaven for 10 minutes or so (even if it was literally just me and VX Pasta dancing to the tunes). Sadly though, the set gradually became more and more ‘modern’, and the breakbeats and pads gave way to two-step drums and Pendulum style wobble basslines. Things changed up again with a long sequence of dubstep tunes that completely confused the crowd, nobody had a clue how they were supposed to dance to them. Full marks for variation, but if only things had kept going in the early style… The video above was taken just at the end of the second track of the set.
Next up on the main floor was Inugami, playing his usual industrial hardcore.I’m not familiar with the tunes, but it was another quality, dark set. This video was taken about halfway through, I think.
LALA’s set wasn’t quite up to his usual standards, and only the second half of his 30 minute slot was the the kind of thing he’s best known for these days. The first few tracks were just insanely happy at a high bpm, but sounded pretty old – they didn’t have the power to match up with the later selections. After that, things picked up a lot, with the video above being a decent example.
Following LALA was speedcore-meister Redd. I did my best to hang in there, but it was pretty extreme stuff and after a while I went back to the main floor to check out ETiENNE. He was playing fairly relaxed psy, which was a nice way to chill out before Kanon’s set.
Kanon played the set of the night, no doubt, with the usual flawless selection and ability to read the crowd. This time she played two of my favourite Lunch tracks – You Controlling (made with Kanon herself) and Oldschool Terrorist, both brilliant tunes.
The rest of the tunes I was familiar with, but still don’t know the titles…The track in the second video especially is a massive THC anthem – I was running out of camera memory by then though, and couldn’t record for too long (I wanted to dance to the second half of the tune, anyway).
I spent HiDE’s set talking with Pasta, his wife and Betwixt & Between (who somehow made it after playing at Hardcore Tano*C in Osaka the previous night), but from what I heard it was a big drop in bpm with a hard dance/schranz feel to it. I wouldn’t envy anyone playing the set between Kanon and Lunch, but he did a good job of keeping a group of diehards on the floor.
Lunch played last this time, and somehow kept everyone dancing right up to 6am. I took a (very) quick video in the middle of his set – he generally mixes this kind of tune with a similar selection to Kanon. He also played the last two versions of his Tokyo Hardcore Construction remix to start and finish.
Another great event then – shouts to all the NRGetic Romancer crew, Lunch, Kanon, Betwixt & Between, Pasta, Misana and two friends of Android Lime who came along to THC to finish of their holiday in Japan.
