Time for another chiptune-styled interlude from Byproduct, with more of the excellent melodies that we’ve come to expect. Cybersynthesis is an original track, but well up to the standards of his past OST remixes. Nice to hear the guitar being integrated so smoothly into the tune, too.
Alchemiist – Mechanical Mayhem 2012 (clip) by Alchemiist
I didn’t have time to post about Alchemiist’s newest freeform track at the start of the week, but here it is for anyone who missed it. Stunning stuff this time, building on the excellent original with some properly dark leads and a very original structure. Still under construction, this is really a tune to be on the lookout for…
Absolutely no time for a real post, but Aryx will be playing a set on the Freeformaniacs show today – be sure to check it out here!
Finally a spare moment this week to mention next month’s Destroyed High, where I’ll be playing a guest set on the main floor. Thanks to September’s Sabbath set, more people seem to be aware that I’m still DJing, and it’s fantastic to finally get a booking from another hardcore event.
Although I couldn’t make it to last month’s Destroyed High, it’s turning into a really quality event that has brought back some of the ravers who have been drifting away from the scene over the past year or so. Massive thanks to Dairin and KA-NA for the invitation to play – I’m planning a set heavy on promo/brand-new NRG and freeform, as well as the kind of harder tunes I can’t get away with when opening NRGetic Romancer.
This time there’s an unusual lineup on both floors, with some less-familiar names guesting, while most of the regulars struggle with the horrendous PA on the 4th floor. You’d think that splitting the event might mean that there’s a danger of thinning out the crowd on both floors, but we’ll see…at least I’ll have a chance to catch my first Zio set for a year or so.

Well well…you can imagine how hard it’s been for me not to mention this until Rx’s announcement last night, but the lineups/venue for March’s 10 Years of FINRG are now decided! The main floor is looking utterly fantastic, and although there are three huge absences in Nomic, Re-Form and Epyx & Cyrez, that’s countered by E-NRG, Pain on Creation’s Live PA (!) and a potentially brutal B2B between Heathen and BRK.
I’ll be there too…and not only that, but I’ll be playing a solo set in the second ‘Urban’ room! I’m genuinely honoured to be taking part in such a huge event, and rest assured that I’ll be doing my very best to represent both Hybridize and Romancer.
This could be the event to end all events, and it’s also going to be awesome to finally meet all the wonderful folk I’ve come to know through FINRG and TYFTH. There’s still plenty of planning to be done, but I’ll obviously be in Helsinki, Lahti and possibly elsewhere if time/money allows. Oh, a bit of practical advice for any Horsers planning to attend – apparently there’s a ski event of some kind on at the same time as the event, so despite it still being some way off, most/all of the hotels in Lahti are already fully booked.
Anyway, the countdown begins now – for the time being, massive thanks to DJ Rx, Drumhead (Carbon Based) and the rest of the FINRG crew!

Substanced – Reptile Zoo by FINRG Recordings
Substanced has released some promising previews of his upcoming album recently, including Reptile Zoo, a nice blend of Finnish nastiness and the more UK-style melodies he sometimes uses these days. Once again the production is already first class, with some awesome sounding synths in that filtered midsection.
Early warning, but this is one event that just might be worth selling a limb to get to. Hard to believe, but next year will mark the 10th anniversary of FINRG as a label/organisation, and happily (after the recent fairly quiet spell) there’s something huge under preparation as we speak. DJ Rx will be appearing on DJ Orion’s Finnish radio show this Friday (from 10pm Finnish time?), where he’ll be playing a set and announcing the full lineup for the anniversary event.
[111113] raq’s mix11 “All_of_Kreatrix_Evilution “ by raqhow
Japanese scene regular raqhow is back again with another mix, this time a Kreatrix-only set full of real classics. I haven’t heard a few of these for a long, long time, but they all have that much-missed Kreatrix atmosphere. Once again, the mixing’s fine, and the opening connection between Unleashed and Deep Vibrations is one of the nicest I’ve heard for a while. raqhow’s definitely making progress with his sets, this is another that’s well worth a listen.
- Twisted Freq – Unleashed
- Anon – Deep Vibrations
- Twisted Freq – Dragon Form
- Nightforce – Estrogen (feat Twisted Freq)
- Horzi – Infernal Psycho
- Micken – The Channeler
- Substanced – Acid world (Twisted Freq’s party remix)
- Twisted Freq – Innocence
Another non-hardcore event (before Destroyed High next weekend), yet again including the Rituals crew, but this time in collaboration with infamous goth event Tokyo Dark Castle. With DJs and bands alternating on stage, it was very different to what I’m used to, but there was plenty of interesting/inspiring stuff to listen to.
The video at the top was actually the penultimate set, from a Prodigy-inspired/tribute group somewhat painfully called The Kusogigy – ‘kuso’ usually translating most gently as ‘damn’ or something similar. They were surprisingly good, even if their original tunes weren’t a patch on the ‘tributes’. The video was taken right at the end of their set, and is obviously their version of Smack My Bitch Up.
Click below for all sorts of other madness…
Anyone who follows mixu’s (aka pocketpool1000) YouTube channel might have noticed already, but there’s an extra artist name floating around from now on. PlasmaDancer was never even supposed to be a DJ name, and so for a while now I’ve been planning on using something else for any tracks I manage to come up with. Listening to the edit of my Hell’s Gate remix the other day, I decided that it’s just about dark enough to warrant the first use of my alias, Afagddu.
I’ve been reading Welsh myths for inspiraton for a while now (I already have a few unfinished tracks with a variety of unpronounceable Welsh names), and decided on Afagddu as it derives from the ancient Welsh for ‘utter darkness’. The whole story behind this pleasant fellow can be found on the Celtic knot-tastic Nemeton, while Beezee might be the only Horser with an idea of how to pronounce it – in Welsh one ‘f’ makes a ‘v’ sound, while ‘dd’ is more like ‘th’.
That makes it the most horrendous word imaginable for Japanese speakers, but I’ll still be PlasmaDancer for everything here/when DJing, so it’s not as if we’ll be seeing it often…
Anyway, many thanks to mixu for the upload – I still have some space on my PlasmaDancer SoundCloud account, so a wav version will be online to download sometime this week.
