This set is a month or so old, but the link via Nomic’s site has been dead for a while. For anyone who missed the inspired/insane reworks of children’s songs, check it out instead on Alek Szahala’s download page. Stick with the set until the end as things gradually speed up, ending with a lovely chiptune from Nomic, his Winwon Windows sound effect-track, and finally some Nomic-brand speedcore.

Looks like the competition for ‘craziest event name in Tokyo’ is still ongoing, but look past that and this could be well worth a visit to Shibuya. HANKY PUNKY has been running since last year, and this time the organisers have managed to book both Guld and Eclipse’s DJ ni-21 to play alongside the rest of the lineup (including Morphonics, previously HASHIMOTO). Morphonics and ni-21 both played great sets at Eclipse a couple of months back, with plenty of schranz/hard techno/NRG in there.

It’s the quietest summer for a few years, but there are still some great tracks out there. A few of these have had some play time in my off-the-cuff ustream sets, and might even end up in the next ‘studio mix’ (which I’m finally starting to think about again).

One of the things that has inspired me to do another real mix is this unbelievable Prodigy-only set from Bluefire. It was originally posted 5 years ago (!), but I dug it out again after listening to the Experience album this past week. Prodigy tunes aren’t really set up for mixing (as anyone who has tried will tell you), which makes some of the double drops/epic transitions in Bluefire’s set even more amazing. It’s absolutely recommended for anyone who hasn’t heard it yet, and after the slower opening section it thankfully concentrates on the Experience/Jilted Generation era. Check out Bluefire’s original post on Dogs On Acid, there might be an active link there somewhere.

  1. Dye In Sound – The Storyteller
  2. Betwixt & Between – Point Of No Return
  3. Proteus – Fist Of The North Star
  4. Samuel K – Neuromancer
  5. Suge – Tanasinn
  6. Betwixt & Between – Enter the Void
  7. Aquanox – Killer Loop
  8. Cyrez – Rock n Load
  9. Poly Calamity – Unam Sanctum
  10.  Nomic – Muuttolintu

Guld recommended Proteus’ Fist Of The North Star to me last weekend, and now I see why – this is yet another quality track that would work just as well in a freeform or Hard NRG set. That intro is amazing, and with those tearing synths it’s great to hear something that sounds so distinctly Finnish. For anyone else who hasn’t checked it out yet, head over to Proteus’ MySpace to listen.

At the last minute I wandered along to this one at the weekend, and it turned out to be a really nice event with one of the ‘happiest’ atmospheres for a long time. Sadly I couldn’t make it in time for DX Pasta’s DJ set, but I met up with a lot of the raver crew (including DJ Takehiro, who I haven’t seen since we played at Last Dance together).

As usual the quality is pretty suspect, but I took a quick video of the epic b2b session at the end of the event. A couple of the crowd had climbed on to the speakers by this point, and slightly cheesy hard trance or not, it was very good fun.

In a couple of hours I’ll be playing a quick Paocala/Alek Szahala only set on ustream, so here’s the stream for anyone who happens to check TYFTH this evening. I ended up going to an event last night though (Get Hard Back, some video coming tomorrow), so I’m already starting to fade a bit. I might not be able to manage much more than an hour or so, but let’s see how it goes…

This is bad timing for most people west of Asia, but Hardcore Tano*C has just started in Shibuya. Brilliantly, they’ve set up a ustream feed for people who can’t make it – sorry I didn’t know about it earlier, but I’ll embed it here for the time being. No Alabaster this time (which is the main reason I haven’t gone), but Betwixt & Between is playing a B2B set with Technetium later in the evening, which’ll really be one to look out for. Looks like a pretty big crowd, with the kind of…special atmosphere you usually get at Tano*C.

Nazomix by TOTAL DISCOMMUNICATION

More from SoundCloud – this time it’s an amazingly creative DJ set from Betwixt & Between. The nazo part of the title means ‘mystery’, and the mix lives up to it with mashed up vocal tunes, hard(core) techno sections and some NRG/freeform towards the end. Most of these vocal tunes would be painful in the extreme at normal speed, but at this bpm and joined by a massive kick they work really well. The mixing’s impressive too, it feels quite similar to one of Betwixt’s NRGetic Romancer Live PAs.

Really worth checking out, then – and while you are on the TOTAL DISCOMMUNICATION page, why not have a listen to some much older Betwixt tracks that were recently uploaded too.
