Proteus’ original Never Show Mercy remix of For All You Heavy Hearted was ferocious enough, but here’s a brand new remastered version to really turn it into the track it should be. Having said that, I must admit that I still prefer the structure and brutal melodies of the unmastered Soittoversio Remix, even if (with Proteus’ blessing) I had to EQ the goodness gracious out of it during the last Munted! Monthly! set. Never Show Mercy is now a wonderful tune though, and one that’ll hopefully see a release soon.

Having followed Hiroyuki Takahashi’s work for a while now, it was more than awesome to see him booked for a live paint session at April’s Dark Dimension. This was another event I couldn’t make thanks to the day job, but it looks like his style was a surprisingly good match for DD’s dark/psychedelic sound (not very well represented in this video, obviously) and the generally wacky vibe of Decadance Bar.

For one reason or another this post was interrupted last week, so before I get completely left behind here’s a brief-ish roundup of Munted! Monthly! Episode 7.

Le Dos-on started things off with an excellent set of his own productions. As is common with one-artist-only mixes, the focus was on the selection rather than transitions, but this was the perfect showcase of Le Dos-on’s style for those who might not be too familiar with his newer tunes.

With influences ranging from Alek Szahala to Hybridize via UK and Japanese freeform, he’s successfully forging a very distinctive sound – starting this time with one of my tunes of the year, the fabulous Intro (epatoivo). The second half of the set leans towards the lighter side of things (the wonderful Le and Sena aside), but his melancholy/darker tracks are just about a match for anything you’ll hear these days.

  1. Intro(epatoivo)

A quick post here, just to remind everyone of a very special Munted! Monthly! – J-Mx and Nomic are guesting on what will be the final show. It’s a real shame that the event is coming to the end of its run, as Chip, Midas and the rest of the crew have done a brilliant job of introducing the less-well known sounds in the freeform scene to a wider audience.

Make sure to head along to Krafty Radio tonight (10pm BST) to show your support one last time.

Dye in Sound fans might be interested in Nuclear Warfare (from 3form Records), as it includes Kill You Slowly, the Dye in Sound Fugees remix with a very strong Nightforce feel to it. The version I’ve played in a couple of sets has always had a good response, but it’s probably a good idea to check the other previews before deciding if this one’s a worthwhile purchase.

There’ll be a few more more posts this evening, but for now here’s Alek Szahala’s latest upload, Mageslayer. This sounds vaguely familiar from 10 Years of FINRG (the post of which is finally under construction, incidentally), a relentless track with a real Hard NRG feel to it. Hang in there until the second half, as the atmosphere deepens nicely and those synths really come into their own.

BEEZEE made another appearance on the Freeformaniacs show this week, with yet another trademark set of filtered madness. This time he’s dropping a few promos, including plenty of new Smiling Corpse material, but the flow is as good as ever. My personal favourite is the Morokai – Prelude connection, an awesome combination that really makes the finale of the set.

  1. Substanced – The End Of All Things (Aryx mix)
  2. Wyrm – Tendrils Of Reality
  3. Penguin Conspiracy – Tripswitch
  4. Micken – Portal
  5. Nomic – Chaos Maker
  6. Pain On Cration – Lush
  7. Transcend – Upwards
  8. Heliakon Vs Ephexis – Exploder
  9. Aryx – Morokai
  10. Epyx and Cyrez – Prelude (Penguin Conspiracy mix)
  11. Alchemist – Anthrax Injection

ikaruga_nex has really been progressing with his UK-influenced freeform over the past few months, including a great remix of Red Fraction (occasionally painful, but here’s the original). This is a tricky one – I’m obviously not the biggest fan of UK/J-Core melodies, and usually avoid vocals, but any track with an intro this brutal is definitely doing plenty right. The first couple of minutes are just brilliant, I can imagine it being a nice interlude in a freeform set with a couple of dark tracks either side…

This set from DJ Yediah is a very welcome return by him to freeform mixing, and is one I missed from a month or so back. If you haven’t checked it out already it’s an excellent mix of old and new, with a really pleasing flow from start to finish.

  1. Digital Anarchy vs Skampy & Mayhem – Illusions Of Sound (Horzi & Meke Remix)
  2. Grimsoul – Kadotettu Todellisuus 2009
  3. Substanced – The Grim Reaper
  4. Alek Szahala – Dryad Machine
  5. Horzi – Human Hater
  6. Substanced & Alchemiist – Skullcrush
  7. Alek Szahala – Maruuk
  8. Grimsoul – Badboy
  9. Substanced – Shadows of Tomorrow
  10. Nick 235 & Solution – Vampires
