Mixes

Thanks to Chip we’re finally able to get our hands on two more sets from last month’s Munted! Monthly! Midas went a bit Duracell bunny at the end of the night, playing an epic 3 hour session of freeform, hardcore and more, but sadly the recording didn’t manage to capture it all.

Instead, sit back and enjoy Chip/Dyzphazia and Nomic, a fitting end to what has been a brilliant series of events. The M!M! shows have done a superb job of bringing together freeform fans from across the world, and giving freeformers the chance to exchange a bit of banter while hearing DJs they might not otherwise have listened to has been a real highlight of the project, I reckon.

Of course, M!M! has also played a massive part in promoting Finnish and Japanese sounds, leading to releases and bookings for more than a few of the artists featured. As we often say, it’s just a case of exposing listeners to our kind of freeform – but it has obviously taken a massive amount of work by both Chip and Midas, who deserve massive kudos (and perhaps some kind of engraved horse trophy) for all their efforts behind the scenes.

Anyway, the mixes – download them all here, and the tracklistings are:

Here are two more sets in the spectacular Munted! series, from FINRG man Grimsoul and Munted!’s own Midas. It’s been a long long time since the last Grimsoul set, which means a nice mix of classics and newer material. Look out for Pyromaniac Firefighter, and also Sorceresses, an interesting track with a beautiful intro (from Skyrim or something similar, isn’t it?). I actually played it at NRGetic Romancer last year, where it bemused Cogi but got a quality reaction from the crowd.

1. Substanced – Shadows of tomorrow (Grimsoul remix)
2. Grimsoul – Pyromaniac firefighter
3. Grimsoul – Jään hautaamat 2012
4. Grimsoul & Pain on creation – Fury theme

6. Substanced & Grimsoul – Harder than you think
7. Grimsoul – I’ll bring the storm
8. Grimsoul – Kadotettu todellisuus
9. Grimsoul – Sorceresses

Midas’ set is packed with the sort of variety you’d expect from him, heavy on the Transcend and Substanced with a nice spot of Qygen at the end. As his mammoth set from last month’s Munted! Monthly! wasn’t recorded (see the next post), this is a nice way to make up for it.

  1. A.B & Solution – Naneater (hu intro mix)
  2. Nu Foundation – Le gra go deo
  3. Douglas feat Rhona – FM22012
  4. Amini – Guitaran

  19. Substanced & ALchemiist – Skullcrush
  20. Aryx – Chaldea
  21. Qygen – L.E.D. Galazy
  22. Qygen – Psyberwarfare
  23. Ben Atomgrinder – Burning moth

I’m a bit behind with my mix-listening at the moment, but a few days ago I finally had the chance to check out J-Mx’s Munted! Monthly! set. This is a really nice mix, an interesting combination of Japanese tunes (leaning towards the J-Core side of things) with Substanced and UK tracks – the nicely consistent sound throughout shows that there’s some quality selection going on here. If you’re after an uplifting set with an edge, then this’ll do the job very nicely.

Download (kuuntele) here, via Klubitus.

  2. Substanced & J-Mx – Flawless Victory

  11. Kevin Energy – Veti Levu
  12. Lv.4 – Ill (2011 Remix)

It seems to have been a long time since the last video from Harder.fi, so it’s nice to see some footage of the latest event (thanks to Syntse, as always). It looks like this was a great event for variety, with J7 and Cyrez from FINRG alongside all sorts of other genres – I couldn’t help smiling during the clip from Tornadoz & D-Shark’s set, they seem to be having an awesome time in the booth.

I’m always interested to see Xelfer playing, as his selection seems quite TYFTH-friendly. I’ve unearthed this 2008 set, but does anyone know if he has any recent mixes online?

Thanks to the good folk at Munted! for pointing me in the direction of the fourth mix in the ‘400 Likes’ series, this time from none other than the young master of darker freeform, Alchemiist. Weirdly I was thinking recently how great an Alchemiist live PA would be, and along comes this set of his own freeform tunes, running from his older tunes right up to Anthrax Injection. It’s another must-listen in what’s been a brilliant series.

Download here, and check out Munted! here.

  1. Substanced – Geneva Part II (Alchemiist Remix)
  2. Alchemiist – Parasite
  3. Alchemiist – Aerobiosis

  8. Alchemiist – Mechanical Mayhem 2012
  9. Substanced & Alchemiist – Skullcrush
  10. Alchemiist – Anthrax Injection

Munted! has managed the impressive feat of reaching 400 Facebook fans (or ‘likes’, if you prefer), and to celebrate the crew have gone way beyond the call of duty with this mix series, enlisting three of the scene’s major artists. Congratulations to Munted! – and of course if you haven’t already, be sure to check out their page for a heady cocktail of freeform news, egg-related puns and badger references.

For one reason or another this post was interrupted last week, so before I get completely left behind here’s a brief-ish roundup of Munted! Monthly! Episode 7.

Le Dos-on started things off with an excellent set of his own productions. As is common with one-artist-only mixes, the focus was on the selection rather than transitions, but this was the perfect showcase of Le Dos-on’s style for those who might not be too familiar with his newer tunes.

With influences ranging from Alek Szahala to Hybridize via UK and Japanese freeform, he’s successfully forging a very distinctive sound – starting this time with one of my tunes of the year, the fabulous Intro (epatoivo). The second half of the set leans towards the lighter side of things (the wonderful Le and Sena aside), but his melancholy/darker tracks are just about a match for anything you’ll hear these days.

  1. Intro(epatoivo)
  2. Stance-Another Story-
  3. Aurora
  4. yksisarvinen
  5. toivomus
  6. Mental Madness
  7. TRANSFORMER
  8. Silver Rain
  9. Sky
  10. Le
  11. Sena

BEEZEE made another appearance on the Freeformaniacs show this week, with yet another trademark set of filtered madness. This time he’s dropping a few promos, including plenty of new Smiling Corpse material, but the flow is as good as ever. My personal favourite is the Morokai – Prelude connection, an awesome combination that really makes the finale of the set.

  1. Substanced – The End Of All Things (Aryx mix)
  2. Wyrm – Tendrils Of Reality
  3. Penguin Conspiracy – Tripswitch
  4. Micken – Portal
  5. Nomic – Chaos Maker
  6. Pain On Cration – Lush
  7. Transcend – Upwards
  8. Heliakon Vs Ephexis – Exploder
  9. Aryx – Morokai
  10. Epyx and Cyrez – Prelude (Penguin Conspiracy mix)
  11. Alchemist – Anthrax Injection

This set from DJ Yediah is a very welcome return by him to freeform mixing, and is one I missed from a month or so back. If you haven’t checked it out already it’s an excellent mix of old and new, with a really pleasing flow from start to finish.

  1. Digital Anarchy vs Skampy & Mayhem – Illusions Of Sound (Horzi & Meke Remix)
  2. Grimsoul – Kadotettu Todellisuus 2009
  3. Substanced – The Grim Reaper
  4. Alek Szahala – Dryad Machine
  5. Horzi – Human Hater
  6. Substanced & Alchemiist – Skullcrush
  7. Alek Szahala – Maruuk
  8. Grimsoul – Badboy
  9. Substanced – Shadows of Tomorrow
  10. Nick 235 & Solution – Vampires

Only a few days before the voting closes in Mark EG’s You’ve got Talent contest, but that’s enough time to show some support to TYFTH regular and scene stalwart BEEZEE. Everyone’s favourite Welsh-dwelling Mancunian DJ has entered a couple of sets, but his excellent The Kraken seems to be the one gathering the most votes. Head along to the CORE site before 9th July and do the right thing.
