Mixes

The other sets will be appearing soon, but Substanced is first on the upload with his mix of promos and classic anthems. By all accounts this one went down well on the night, soon settling nicely into FINRG territory with quality selections that include some of Substanced’s brand new material.

Brilliantly I’ve been so busy that I haven’t even had a chance to give a shout for the event I’m playing at! Most will have seen the news already, but Chip, Midas and the Munted! crew have gone beyond the call of duty with a massive event on Krafty Radio this month. First of all I’m very grateful to all the Freeform Forum folk who voted for my return this time around (alongside Substanced), making it a real Japanese takeover with Le Dos-on and Betwixt & Between. Three hours of Tokyo/Nagoya freeform, that’s even more than you’d hear at a Japanese event these days (!).

It looks like I’ll once again be going without sleep to somehow rustle something up before a week Saturday, but what an opportunity for the Japan crew. Stay tuned for set times!

Well done to young Mr Midas for this very welcome set, showcasing the talents of the king of goacore, Qygen. I know from experience how fun it can be to mix an hour or two of Qygen tracks together, and here Midas has managed to fit in a nice variety of tunes, always easier said than done when going for an ‘artist mix’.

Sadly I wasn’t able to get to volume 4 of raqhow’s experience!, but here’s a great video report that runs through all the main floor madness. As you can see, it looks like the balance between all the genres was spot on, even if there wasn’t any darker freeform on show this time. raqhow’s excellent b2b set with NONAKA+CHIN was recorded and is downloadable here, while there should be a special mention for ikaruga_nex, who looks like he also came up with another nice set.

A bit late giving this one some TYFTH time, but Tyranoid’s new set joins Pearsall’s 10 Years of FINRG set as one of the real mix highlights of the year so far. There’s no holding back here, with an excellent, dark atmosphere that runs through industrial, psy, NRG and freeform.

The selection is top class, including a few tracks from Tiifa, who seems to be a really promising new producer. Add in some FINRG classics and it would already be an absolutely recommended set, but the climactic mix/mashup between 2023 and Engel is truly inspired. That there is the sound of a DJ doing what we should all aim for – creating an amazing, unique atmosphere that you simply can’t get when listening to the two tunes separately. Needless to say, it’s the mix connection of the year so far, for me.

  1. Combichrist – Forgotten
  2. Tiifa – Cut Off (Diablik remix)
  3. Trimada – I Am
  4. Sinith – Found Objects
  5. Ultraform – What I Saw
  6. Epyx & Cyrez – Game Over
  7. Tiifa – Get Hit
  8. Tiifa feat. Double T – Blood Lust
  9. Proteus – Get Fire!
  10. Guld – Hannya X (Proteus Kampai Forever remix)
  11. Tiifa – Face
  12. Nemes & Blender – Inquisition (Blender remix)
  13. Nomic – Bad Dream
  14. Osmo – 2023 (Tyranoid/Strongstream remix)
  15. Scala & Kolacny Brothers – Engel

I’ve got a lot of catching up to do when it comes to Freeformaniacs sets, but this new effort from Custom Built DJs caught my eye with its lively-looking tracklist. As expected, it’s a really nice hour of melodic freeform, with enough of a Finnish influence to ensure there’s a bit of an edge to things.

Nice to see the filter-tastic Gate Crasher in there, as well as less common choices like the tricky-to-mix Immaculate. It’s always great to hear Alek in a set, but this time the incredible atmosphere of Darkstar didn’t really match with the rest of the set, in my opinion – wonder if a more uplifting tune might have worked better to finish things off? Either way it’s a really enjoyable set, and definitely gets a recommend.

  1. Jon Doe – Warehouse (Cube::Hard remix)
  2. Epyx and Cyrez – Immaculate
  3. Grimsoul – Lightshaft
  4. Substanced – Wistful
  5. Furyan – Galaxias Glaciere
  6. Custom Built DJs – Get out of Here
  7. Eryk Orpheus – PVC (Lost Soul remix)
  8. Penguin Conspiracy – Mechanical Fables
  9. Ephexis – Sick Seduction
  10. Full Circle DJs – Gate Crasher
  11. Horzi – Infernal Psycho
  12. Alek Szahala – Darkstar

Here’s a very highly recommended set from Olly Addictive (of Smiling Corpse infamy), mixed just before last week’s Sinistry over in the UK. This was a really nice surprise, from the creative tracklist to the interesting mixing – fans of the older FINRG sound, filtered hoovers and acid will feel right at home, with Olly’s pacing and selection absolutely spot on.

Photic Zone is an excellent choice to start, and there’s a great blend of nasty filters and melodies in the first half. The overall atmosphere of the set is pleasingly dark, while any fears that things might tail off after the promising opening are put to rest with some quality connections like Geneva II – Kadotettu Todellisuus and the mad-but-it-works Adagio – The Definition of Freeform. This has been my commuting soundtrack for a couple of days now, and is absolutely worth a download.

01) Weirdo – Photic Zone
02) The Mexican – Land of the Pharaohs (Carbon Based Remix)
03) Tempestarii – Lightning Force
04) Carbon Based & DJ Rx – Reptile
05) Oli G – Cordelia
06) Raver Rose & Thermal Force – Eternal Cannon (DJ Rx Remix)
07) Substanced – Geneva pt. II
08) Grimsoul – Kadotettu Todellisuus
09) Lost Soul – Outta My Brain
10) Endemic – Loki
11) Mark Ashley & K-Complex – Imitation of Life
12) Nomic – Unique Mind (Horzi Remix)
13) Alek Száhala – Barber’s Adagio for Strings
14) Tazz & Shanty ft. MC Drew – The Definition of Freeform (Olly Addictive Remix)
15) Scott Brown – Boomstick

This is a set from last month that I’ve only just had a chance to check out – ASAHI is making really big strides now that he’s resident at Dark Dimension, and seems to being doing a great job of finding a new audience for his style of NRG/Freeform.

Final Destination starts off in traditional ASAHI/AT style with a Nomic track, this time it’s Falling Star, with a lovely transition into PoC’s Adaption. The rest of the set is full of nice selections that most Horsers will approve of, but interesting to hear BRK’s new FINRG releases (The Nobodies and Keep on Pushing) back-to-back, something he also tried at one of last year’s Destroyed Highs.

A really nice set then, and for anyone also into dark electro/industrial ASAHI has recently upped a Dark Dimension style mix that’s also well worth a listen.

Proteus’ newest mix album is on the way next week, with a very tasty looking tracklist and plenty of support for the Japanese scene, as you’d expect. There are also a couple of tunes from Proteus’ newest project Skylight, and I’m really looking forward to hearing how it all fits together.

01. Proteus – New Dawn
02. Skylight – Devil Down (Instrumental)
03. Skylight – Stargate (Original)
04. DJ Husband – Activate (Proteus Remix)
05. Proteus – Sucker! (Main Mix)
06. Atari Teenage Riot – Black Flags (Muffler Remix)
07. Antolini & Montorsi – Are Am Eye (Original Mix)
08. Tnt Aka Technoboy ‘N’ Tuneboy And Kutski – Sucksess (Extended Version)
