Mixes

Massive congratulations to Dyzphazia, Midas and the Munted crew for what looked like a really successful online event on Friday/Saturday. I managed to catch 30 minutes or so over breakfast, and it looked like there was a very decent crowd in the Krafty chatroom.

Dyzphazia’s set is now online for download, and it’s an essential listen if you didn’t catch it first time around. This time Chip has gone all out for variety, fitting in some brand new Finnish tracks, Betwixt, Alek and some classic oldies. As you’d expect, the mixing is rock-solid (with Lemonade Raygun>Rock n Load being my favourite, I think), and the plan of coming up with a ‘club-style’ set seems to have worked nicely, with the atmosphere often switching from nasty to trancy, and then back again.

  1. Rank 1 – L.E.D. Let There Be Light (CDR)
  2. DJ Fury – Lemonade Raygun (Main Floor Mix) (Stompin Choonz)
  3. Cyrez – Rock ‘n’ Load (CDR)
  4. Endemic Vs. Solution – Outbreak (DJ Rx Remix) (Nu Energy Collective)
  5. Between & Between – Tout Est Bien (Sein Zum Tode) (Hardcore Tano*C)
  6. Amini – Eupraxia (CDR)
  7. Aeternity – After Dark (CDR)
  8. Lost Soul – Warlock (Rebuild Records)
  9. Alek Szahala – Astraia (Rebuild Records)
  10. Cosmic Gate – Back to Earth (Alchemiist Bootleg) (CDR)
  11. Pain On Creation – Lush (Fatal Error Edit) (FiNRG)
  12. Betwixt & Between – Tankobu Hesotarou No Hourou (Hardcore Tano*C)
  13. Alek Szahala – Sunray (Unfinished Forever) (FiNRG)

A thousand and one thanks to Pearsall (of excellent blog Sonicrampage) for letting me know about this gem from back in the day. It seems that it was originally released on CD as a magazine promotion, mixed by early pioneer DJ Fury.

Anyone familiar with classics like Lemonade Raygun will partly know what to expect, but this brilliant set actually goes all the way from oldskool trancecore to piano-and-amens happy hardcore. I missed out on a lot of the less-happy tunes at the time (and also never realised that Billy Bunter was responsible for Let It Lift You!), so this was both a superb listen and quite an education.

01. Helix – Testament
02. Cortex – Eurosis
03. DJ Fury & Helix – Y Not
04. D-Zyne & Fury – Hyperhydrosis
05. Justin Time – The No. 1
06. Helix – Helixia
07. DJ Fury – Droppin’ Bombs
08. Different Vibe – Can You Feel It
09. Billy Bunter & JDS feat. Gem – Let It Lift You
10. Highlife & Style – Bits and Bobs
11. We 3 – Groovy Dimensions
12. N-Zo & DJ Invincible – Trippin’ On Sunshine

Check out Pearsall’s original post for the download link, plus a very tasty-looking hardcore techno set (that I haven’t had a chance to listen to yet).

Gaiaforce – フリーフォーム楽しい by Gaiaforce

Two mixes to post about tonight, the first of which is Gaiaforce’s new J-Core/freeform set, Freeform Tanoshii. A glance at the tracklist will show that this mix is heading deep into Hardcore Tano*C territory, with a Japan-only selection and some tunes that we don’t often (or ever, even) see on TYFTH.

Starting off with Eternal Cannon, Gaia’s set manages to include tracks as varied as Tano*C anthem Moonlives, Tout est Bien and Outer Space. After a really impressive intro, some of the connections are more successful than others (inevitable really, with this much variety), but the lovely sequence of TeB, Alive in the Darkness and Optical Force features a really nice mix at the end. I might not be a huge fan of the Tano*C sound these days, but I enjoyed this a lot, and there’s plenty of potential for a series of ‘J-Core for a freeform audience’ sets. Gaia is definitely on the right track (and technically already very good), so hopefully it won’t be too long before the next installment.

01 RaverRoseTF – Eternalcanon
02 DJ SHARPNEL – TRANCEFORMer
03 REDALiCE – Energy Stream
04 DJ Noriken – Moonlight Cluster
05 Masayoshi Minoshima – Moonlives
06 Betwixt & Between – Tout est Bien (Sein zum Tode)
07 LV.4 – Alive in the darkness
08 umbrella – Optical Force
09 Ryu* – orion
10 源屋 – Outer Space
11 Alabaster – Forgotten Ancient
12 DJ Technetium – チーターマンNRG (FREE FORM MIX)
13 Ark-Z – 夢見

Einhander Live@NRGETIC ROMANCER 13,August 2011 by Shriekerz

Apologies for the NRGetic Romancer report being so late this time around. They tend to take a while to write and I’m horribly busy at the moment, but I’ll try to get something done after Sabbath has finished. As a preview, then, here’s what was maybe the set of the night.

Einhander played two Live PAs, but the first was under his hardstyle alias, Shriekerz. The second was a simply phenomenal Hard NRG set, and hard as it was to believe, his first time playing it at an event. Most of the crew agreed that we haven’t heard this standard of Hard NRG for a long time – Einhander’s tunes blew the place apart, and it was impossible not to get caught up in the insane filtering and awesome breakdowns.

Thanks to Einhander for putting the whole recording online – it’s fantastic to see the emergence of such a talented new producer here in Tokyo.

A slightly last minute heads-up that Dyzphazia (aka Chip, of course) will be appearing on the brand-new Freeformanics radio show tomorrow morning (UK time). This is a fantastic idea – a series of mixes from the crew at the Freeform Forum, covering all angles of the genre. Stray played the first set (a very nicely mixed UK freeform set), and this time around Dyzphazia will be showcasing some old and new tunes from Finland and Japan.

Make sure to check the Krafty Radio homepage tomorrow and show some support. There’ll be some really quality tunes, and rumour has it that the man himself will even be on the mic (!) to guide newbies through the tracks.

I always make it a rule to listen all the way through new sets before I post them on TYFTH, but sadly I haven’t yet had time for the full two hours this one needs. Mixed by Substanced to celebrate his upcoming gig at Munted (could there be a more British name for an event?), this is a real epic that runs through a whole stack of anthems.

The opening of the set must be a little sequence that Substanced has worked on lately – it’s really seamless stuff, and unless there are massive problems in the second half of the set (Substanced falling asleep at the decks?), by the halfway point it was shaping up to be one of the most enjoyable listens of the summer.

  1. Substanced – Geneva Part II
  2. Alek Szahala – Ziggurat
  3. Epyx & Cyrez – Risk Addiction (Substanced Remix)
  4. Horzi – Face The Destiny

  8. Alek Szahala – Iron Squid
  9. Substanced feat. Jnks – Seismic Activity (Version 2)
  10. Substanced – Shadows of Tomorrow
  11. Pain On Creation – V8
  12. Carbon Based – Titors Quantum Theory
  13. Substanced – Freeform Mercury
  14. Heliakon vs. Ephexis – Iliad –
  15. Alek Szahala – Deimos

PlasmaDancer – NRGetic Romancer 7th Anniversary by FINRG Recordings

No, your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you – it’s my first recorded NRG/Freeform set for over two years (!). Many thanks to Guld for allowing this 7th Anniversary mix to go online, it’s now downloadable via the FINRG SoundCloud.

A quick look at the tracklist will show it’s a little different to (and slower than) my past sets, as we were working with a a few restrictions this time. The tunes are limited to artists who’ve played at NRGetic Romancer in the past seven years, and the track selection was split between me and Guld (any guesses as to who chose what?). It was quite a challenge to come up with a decent set before the deadline, but I’m fairly happy with the end result.

Anyway, I’m especially pleased with the first half, and there’s plenty of new material for NRG fans. I was struggling to fit things in towards the end of the set, but I quite like the Frozen AbyssZiggurat connection, followed of course by DJ One Hit Wonder’s remix of Hell’s Gate.

My next recorded set is on pause yet again, for reasons I’ll probably explain later in the week, but feel free to give this set a listen. Feedback’s very welcome, as always!

01. Proteus – Try Harder
02. Adam Lab 4 – Infernal Desire (Lab 4 Psycho Surgery remix)
03. DJ X Lab 4 – Captain Black
04. Jody 6 & ConfigSys Project – Japanese Ghost Train
05. Lab 4 – Concept of Love (Guld remix)
06. Guld – Hannya X (Android Lime remix)
07. Shanty vs Epyx & Cyrez – Frozen Abyss (Full Circle DJs remix)
08. Alek Szahala – Ziggurat
09. Zio – Hell’s Gate (PlasmaDancer remix)
10. Betwixt & Between – Tout est Bien (Sein zum Tode)
11. RR-ThermalForce – Al Megiddo

Labraska-Nattskog by Labraska

There haven’t been many freeform-only sets recently, but Labraska’s newest is one of those rare efforts that really takes you on a ‘journey’. Add some excellent mixing to the well-structured selection, and its no wonder that I’ve already given it a couple of listens.

Starting off with some of the better UK freeform tunes of the past year or so, things really take off with the introduction of Carbon Based’s Dark Side. I won’t spoil the tracklist, but the next mix had me nodding in approval as it came in, and the standard’s really maintained for the rest of the mix. For the first time in an age, I was genuinely looking forward to what Labraska was going to do with each new connection, which is always the sign of a great set.

Not a bad word to say about this one, then…it’s a must-listen.

Heathen recently played a very well-received Harder.fi set during his trip to Finland, and luckily it was recorded. This is a proper dancefloor set, with pretty much incessant energy from start to finish, and of course includes some of Heathen’s own new material (as well as long time favourite, Hesotarou Tankobu).

I’m hoping to get a full tracklist ASAP, but for the time being you can download here.
