Matt England – Promo Mix 2010 by FINRG Recordings

Here’s a very welcome promo mix from Matt England, with an atmosphere that anyone on TYFTH should enjoy. After Psiosis, the set has a less dark feel, but after Alek Szahala’s Lumi it definitely gets going again. I was pleasantly surprised by Lost Soul’s Beyond Salvation, and the sequence following that is really very nice. Listen out too for Evol Intent’s Middle of the Night, a very nice selection followed by Shunt.

It’s highly recommended, and online now at the FINRG SoundCloud. Here’s the tracklist:

1. Matt England – Psiosis
2. Lost Soul – Love Can Destroy
3. Asa & S1 – Cured
4. Matt England – Underground
5. Alek Szahala – Lumi
6. Matt England – Consciousness
7. Lost Soul – Beyond Salvation
8. Alek Szahala – Maruuk
9. Matt England – Decelerate
10. The Qemists – Stompbox (Spor Remix)
11. Evol Intent – Middle of the Night
12. Ephexis – Shunt
13. Alek Szahala – From Flesh to Machines

Most people will have heard this before, but a while ago I came across Perappyyhe Part II on YouTube, and can’t resist posting it up. Made under Alek Szahala’s early moniker, Apofish, it’s still a really nice track, and made me go back and check out some of his other earlier tunes (like his excellent 1997 Ravemix).

What really interests me is that Alek was using FastTracker 2 for his producing back then, which is what really got me into music making, too (we’re almost the same age, I think). Knowing what goes into making a tracked tune, and considering how long ago he put them together, it’s hard not to be really impressed. Somehow he was coming up with stuff in the late 90s that already showed signs of the Alek Szahala sound – just listen to some of the melodies and the flow of the tunes…

The latest in the Crush on Hardcore series has been in the works for a while, and now there’s just a month or two more until release. This time the DJs are Cube::Hard, Shanty and a final FINRG set from JNKS/Swoosh and Rx/Carbon Based. The other big news is that there will be a physical version released in small numbers too (for free), as well as a follow-up CD of full tracks called Sequel of the V…also for free.

Inside this post is the promotional text from the COH crew, including the full tracklists. Watch out for some nice new tunes from FINRG in the final set…

The first Top Ten for quite a while, but first here’s an amazing tune I completely forgot about until a couple of days ago. This week I’ve been listening to a very nice mix of Photek’s mid-90s dark, minimal tunes, and UFO is right in the middle of the set. It has some of the best use of voice samples I’ve ever heard, taking lines from the audio recording of the UFO sighting at Rendlesham Forest in the UK (here’s the second half of the recording that Photek sampled). Whether it’s a hoax or not (!) there are about a million sample-worthy lines, and Photek used them perfectly. With his trademark drums, amazing sub bass and weird sounds, it’s a special tune, no mistake.

Anyway, back to freeform:

  1. Nomic – Muuttolintu
  2. Alek Szahala – Lagash
  3. Nomic – Walking in the Air
  4. Alek Szahala -Astraia
  5. Substanced – Crank Cleopatra
  6. Guld – Hannya X (Proteus “Kampai Forever” remix)
  7. Betwixt & Between – Nemesis
  8. Poly Calamity – Unam Sanctam
  9. Nightforce – Symphony for the Devil (The Virus Escaped)
  10. Hase – Disintegration

Dyzphazia – Freeformensaundi by Dyzphazia

Dyzphazia’s been busy with another mix, and it’s easily his best yet. Very twisted from start to end, but with the melodies in all the right places, it’s great to see how his selection is coming along – this one has some of the nicest combinations I’ve heard for a long time, and just look at the tracklist:

  1. Proteus – Venla Pt.2
  2. Epyx & Cyrez – Black Mamba
  3. Pain on Creation – Shine
  4. Alek Szahala – Supriya (live edit)
  5. DJ Rx – Code of Silence
  6. Epyx & Cyrez – Heroes for Sale
  7. Alek Szahala – Dryad Machine
  8. Pain on Creation -Lush (Carbon Based remix)
  9. DJ Rx – Fish Eye
  10. Epyx & Cyrez – Unhola
  11. Pain on Creation – Iron Works
  12. DJ Rx – Frozen Flame
  13. Alek Szahala – Voices of Babylon
  14. RR-ThermalForce – Eternal Cannon

Combining the new with the old, there’s probably a tune for everyone here, plus what I think might be the best mix into Eternal Cannon I’ve heard so far. Other mixes that especially caught my ear were Black Mamba>Shine and Fish Eye>Unhola, but the effort that’s gone into the whole set is clear. Very highly recommended – support a fellow TYFTH reader and check this one out ASAP.

It’s worth mentioning that if you’re scared by the idea of downloading a mix in wav format, there’s a link for a 256kbps mp3 on the SoundCloud, too.

Nomic – Promo 10 by nomic

Following yesterday’s post, here we have a brand new promo mix from Nomic himself. Given that his recent tunes (apart from Aurinkoon) seem to have been a bit slower, I was expecting 160bpm+, but it starts off with Falling Star, hammering along at a nice 170.

There isn’t an official tracklist yet, but a few of my recent favourites are in there – Desolated Dreams, Delta Pavonis and the new Muuttolintu. A Nomic-only set is about as good an hour of music as you’re going to hear anywhere…aside from a couple of off connections (hard to avoid with such complex tunes) I really can’t recommend this one highly enough.

I nearly forgot to mention that he also has a wonderful new Anomic track on the SoundCloud. Called My Universe, it’s a beautiful tune, something like a 5-minute Nomic breakdown with its strings, piano and occasional techy sounds.

I’m really late to this set, but finally gave it a listen on the train yesterday. It’s another good one from Decion, with some very nasty tracks, especially in the middle of the set. My favourite tune was actually Alchemiist and Decion’s remix of Beliar’s Jigsaw – just enough melody to make it stand out, and the synths are fantastic again. As usual, it’s highly recommended.

1. Defective Audio & Weazal & Firefox – Twisted Mission
2. Shenton & IAHH & Riggsy – Annihilate
3. Matt Morris & Riggsy Feat. Nat – Scooby Doo
4. Defective Audio & Michael Smith – Freak Attack
5. Random But Raw – Commander
6. Beliar – Jigsaw (Alchemiist & Decion Remix)
7. Valex – Shake Rattle & Rolla
8. Michael Smith – Torture
9. Crazy Chris – Bad Asses
10. Dramatik – Swear Jar

I can’t resist posting this one – a 10-minute clip of a very heavy jungle set from Ellis Dee, playing at one of the UK’s 90s mega-raves, Dreamscape. I wasn’t there (I was only 13 at the time!), but managed to get hold of a recording of this set (as well as a few others) from a friend, and listened to them for the next ten years or so…It’s sets like these that made me think about one day mixing tunes myself, so hearing them again for the first time in years has genuinely made my week.

Have a listen…get past the MCs and there are some great tunes in this first 10 minutes.

Substanced – Freeform from Finland (promo mix 2010) by FINRG Recordings

Anyone (like me) who missed Substanced’s appearance on the Free of Form radio show should be happy to see that his 2010 promo mix is now online. It’s a really nice set, and makes you realise the variety of tracks Substanced has been coming up with lately. From uplifting tunes that will get the crowd going (Challenge 2009, Do You Love), to nasty twisted crazy stuff (Freeform Mercury, Crank Cleopatra) and everything in-between, there’s pretty much something for everyone here. Standout parts for me included Crank Cleopatra (which went down very well at NRGetic Romancer), the insane intro to Challenge 2009, and that lovely breakdown melody in Escalate. Here’s the tracklist, and you can give a listen at the top of this post, too:

1. Substanced – Aquarius
2. Substanced – Apocalypse (2010 Remake)
3. Substanced – Challenge 2009
4. Substanced – Escape From Zombieland
5. Substanced – Escalate
6. Horzi – The Elegy (Substanced Remix)
7. Substanced – Crank Cleopatra
8. Substanced & Nightforce – Do You Love                                                                                                                                         9. Substanced – Meteor
10. Substanced – Freeform Mercury
