I know I’ve said this before, but I’m now 100% trying to get the next NRG Monogatari finished ASAP. The next NRGetic Romancer is the 18th of April, so I’ll be aiming to get it done in the next few weeks and have enough time to come up with some decent track choices to play there. The next set will almost certainly be recorded, too, so hopefully there’ll be a couple of new mixes from me in the near-ish future!
Mixes
Munetica has uploaded a new hard housey/hard trance mix on the Energize site, as a preview to the Energetic Trance event next week. Not downloadable, from what I can tell, but definitely worth a listen for fans of the lower bpms.
Head over to the Energize JP site, and you’ll find the player under the ‘What’s New’ section.
A little late with this one (when am I anything else, these days?), but I really wanted to recommend Tyranoid’s new mix. Throwing together industrial, NRG and freeform, this is really ambitious and works incredibly well.
This is a little similar to the ‘different’ kind of mix I was thinking of doing a couple of months ago, but there’s no way I could match this one – Tyranoid really knows his stuff.
The tracklist:
01 Front Line Assembly – Mortal
02 Combichrist – This Shit Will Fuck You Up
03 Panzer AG – Filth God (Tyranoid/Strongstream remix)
04 Combichrist – Today I Woke to the Rain of Blood
05 Front Line Assembly – Infra Red Combat
06 Ultraform – I’m in Your Head
07 Blender – Illogical
08 Epyx & Cyrez – Static Response
09 Front Line Assembly – Synthetic Forms
10 Twisted Freq – Sin Cells
11 Tyranoid/Strongstream vs Substanced – Still Hope?
12 Nomic – You Have a Dream
13 Blender & Nomic – Battle of Dawn
14 Sabes – Machines
The report from last weekend’s event will be coming tomorrow, but in the meantime here’s Swoosh’s fantastic mix to commemorate FINRG’s 5th anniversary. I’m a bit late posting this up, but it’s a definite must listen, with a lot of new Hybridize material and bags of energy.
The tracklist:
1. Grimsoul – UG
2. Pero – Obsession
3. ? – Wasteland (Rob.O.T.T. Bootleg remix)
4. Wid & Ben – Absolution (Emilio 2008 Remix)

Since seeing his set at NRGetic Romancer (in 2007, scarily) I’ve been quite a fan of Nish, and so even if his sound doesn’t exactly fit in with the rest of the stuff on TYFTH lately, I thought it might be worth mentioning that he has a new mix up on his site. Sadly it’s only available to stream, as far as I can see, but it’s a combination of tech dance and more uplifting tunes (look out for Nish’s remix of Alphazone’s Flash Back, especially), and well worth a listen. In the ‘What’s New’ section on the right of this page there should be a news piece looking something like this:
A Happy New Year!
今年一年も応援よろしくお願いします!

Sorry for the lack of updates during the last few days, I was a bit busy with work and then went to Tokyo Hardcore Construction on Sunday night (Monday was a national holiday, thanks heavens). Anyway, one of the DJs at THC was Lala, a regular there but someone I’ve never actually seen play – you may also remember him from the recent THC preview videos. Anyway, I was expecting dark and nasty speedcore or something, but his genre of choice is actually retro-themed hardcore/gabber. His set on Sunday was really good fun, and so here’s his promo mix from the Hardcore Construction site, if you’ve missed it until now (as I had).
I’d forgotten how much I love those old happy hardcore style kicks and simple melodies, and I defy you not to have a little dance/head-nod while listening to this set. The file’s only 30-something Mb, so you’ve (almost) nothing to lose – download it here.
Two new sets for DJ Yousuke/Full Circle DJ fans, the first is the backing mix for the excellent Full Circle Live PA at last month’s NRGetic Romancer (once again minus Buzzmasta’s effects/percussion and Yousuke’s guitar). Download here, and a tracklist will be coming soon too, I think.
The second mix is really something special – mixed by Yousuke, I suppose you’d call it ‘breakbeat’, but moves from an initial hip-hop track, into modern(?)-old skool/jungle, psychadelic breakbeat (is that a genre?), and finishes with some very banging drum and bass bootleg tunes. On the first listen through I hardly knew any of the tunes, but I managed to pick up on er, someone’s brilliant remix of The Police’s Walking on the Moon (which I first heard in an older Yousuke set), and The Acolyte’s Cypherpunk. Apart from that, I was lost…but this is really quality mixing, and some of the jungle-style tunes are sure to bring back good memories for anyone of a certain age.
Tracklist as soon as I can, but listen to it anyway, here.
Alabaster has just announced his newest mix album, and it looks very very good indeed. Future Sight features tunes by Alabaster himself, Umbrella, a surprisingly freeform-ish tune from Minamotoya, and two Betwixt & Between tracks, War Monger and Tankobu Hesotarou no Hourou (The wandering of Hesotarou Tankobu). War Monger is a pretty old tune, but a real classic…incredibly hard, with a brilliant break and vocal sample (“We’re going to die now“, she says). THnoH is brand new (Betwixt completed it on the day of the last Hell’s Gate), and one of his best for a good while. It has a hard trance feel, but is more ‘traditional BTW’ than some of his recent experiments. Really excellent track.
Anyway, all of the other tunes on the mix CD are very nice, and the atmosphere is completely different to UK or Finnish freeform – it seems like Japanese Hard NRG is really starting to build up its own identity. Incidentally, two unmixed tracks are also included, Alabaster’s The Clairvoyance (Distortion Girl) and Ziggurat. The CD will be released on the 29th of this month, at the Comiket (Comic Market) event for doujin (fan-produced) manga and related stuff. I’ll try to find out if it’s available from abroad, as this release looks like a definite must-buy.
This isn’t a brand new mix, but Yousuke recently uploaded it while he tries to come up with another one. Not every track is my sort of thing, but it’s a great example of Yousuke’s mixing style, and his ridiculously wide knowledge of hardcore/drum and bass. It’s generally UK Hardcore/Freeform style, but drifts into harder tunes and amen-style jungle tracks too. It’s the first time for me to hear Ephexis and Oli G’s Enchanter, very nice tune…but a lot of the tracks are a few steps away from what I usually listen to, and it’s a mix well worth checking out.

I haven’t been too well this week, but it’s about time I posted up a couple of recent bits and pieces. There was an Xtreme Hard event last Saturday, featuring Full Circle DJs – I couldn’t get to this one, but thankfully the set was uploaded a few days ago. Pretty similar to their recent Live PAs, this one also features the excellent remix of Shanty and Epyx & Cyrez’s Frozen Abyss.
- DJ Rx – Hellfire (Full Circle DJs remix)
- Full Circle DJs – Halcyon
- Shanty vs Epyx & Cyrez – Frozen Abyss (Full Circle DJs remix)
- Full Circle DJs – Gate Crasher
