Mixes

Here’s the first news from this month’s NRGetic Romancer, and well worth waiting for – DJ Yousuke’s solo set. This could his best set for a while, and the first few tracks are just fantastic, building up a brilliant atmosphere. I haven’t got a tracklist handy, but it’s mostly UK-styled freeform, and even if you’re not into that sort of thing I urge you to give it a listen, it really is good stuff.

I have another mix or two waiting in the wings, and so if/when I get permission, those’ll be on the upload too.

Tokyo Hardcore Construction is almost happening as we speak – I can’t make it this time, but my girlfriend is probably going. Anyway, for folk like me who can’t get to the event, we can create the same atmosphere in our own homes (minus huge speakers and a crew of cybergoths) with a huge crop of gabber/NRG/all sorts of other stuff mixes over at the THC archive. I must admit that I haven’t had time to listen to all the sets yet, but for freeform fans the standout will surely be Betwixt & Between’s hard NRG mix, the tracklist of which is as follows:

  1. Nomic – Make Me Real
  2. Alek Szahala – Superstition
  3. Marco V – Godd (Tyranoid/Strongstream extended remix)
  4. Eclipse – Stairway to Brooklyn
  5. Distressed Frequencies – Victimized
  6. Alek Szahala – Anmitzcuacua
  7. Alek Szahala – Firecloud

Pretty tasty, no? It gives a really good idea of Betwixt’s NRG/freeform influences, and is very nicely put together – dark and extremely hard, with an interesting choice of Stairway to Brooklyn in the middle there.

I also have to recommend the mixes by Lunch (quite possibly the finest gabber DJ in Tokyo) and Kanon, also a master of ‘real’ dark gabber (rather than the demented anime-style efforts of Sharpnel et al).

As far as I know this set wasn’t recorded, but I thought it might be worth posting up Alabaster’s tracklist from Touhou Carnival a week ago. As you can see, it’s not only NRGetic Romancer and Hell’s Gate which are pushing the Finnish sound – this set looks fantastic, and I really hope that I can make it to the next event (as Betwixt also plays there, too). Playing V8 as the second track is about as hardcore as it gets, and  Hellfire followed by Zable Fahr sounds like a really interesting mix.

  1. Alabaster – Reality Haze
  2. Pain on Creation – V8
  3. Alabaster – Machine Messiah
  4. DJ Rx – Hellfire
  5. Alabaster – Zable Fahr
  6. Alabaster – Forgotten Ancient
  7. Alabaster – The Barrel Maze
  8. Pain on Creation – Mortality
  9. Alabaster – Void

Sam One released this one a few days back, another collection of his own productions/collaborations. I really am a fan of the first one, and there’s some really inspired mixing as well as the impressive tunes, so I was very keen to check this one out. Once again, there are a few storming tracks – he really knows how to come up with energetic melodies – and the epic intro followed by Supernova is a great way to kick things off. Other highlights include his remix of Rx’s Code of Silence and already released Hybridize material (The Future and Lionheart). I have to say that I do prefer the first mix, as that seemed to have the perfect combination of hard trance style melodies and freeform roughness, but this is still a great set and definitely worth checking.

  1. Sam One – Intro
  2. Sam One – Supernova
  3. Sam One – The Future
  4. Sam One – Hypnotize
  5. DJ Rx – Code of Silence (Sam One remix)
  6. Sam One & Horzi – Fear of Reality
  7. Sam One, Substanced and Horzi – Lionheart

Here’s the long-awaited news re. Alabaster’s new ‘Lab 4-esque’ tracks, plus a whole new album. Delta Attack is another game-related arrange work, this time concentrating on Final Fantasy and other Square-produced role-playing games. The standout track here is Zable Fuhr, a pounding hard NRG style tune complete with grinding synths and slightly-repetitive-but-addictive lead melodies. Interestingly, the tune is based on a piece of BGM from one of my old favourites, Seiken Densetsu 3 (or Secret of Mana 2), the Super Nintendo classic of yesterdecade. It should be noted however that this album is mixed, with two bonus tracks at the end (neither of which is Zable Fuhr, unfortunately).

Alabaster has also come up with two more Hard NRG tracks which really show his newfound grasp of the genre. The first is Void, as we suspected all along – this one is very pacy with a slightly retro Finnish feel to it, and can be found on the Hardcore Syndrome 2 compilation. The other is Headless, which features some brilliant, almost Hase-esque synth work at a slightly lower bpm. Currently I’m not too sure when/where it’s going to see a release, but I’ll be sure to update this post with any info as soon as I get it.

DJ Yousuke has recently uploaded the mix that accompanied the Full Circle Live PA at NRGetic Romancer this month, and it’s another stormer. It’s missing Yousuke’s guitar/Buzzmasta’s taiko and er, laser-thing-that-makes-a-noise (I don’t have a clue what you call it), but you get the gist of things, at least. It was an awesome set live, with a rock gig/hardcore atmosphere that had everyone hooked by the end, and it’s also worth checking out for the remix of Shanty vs Epyx & Cyrez’s Frozen Abyss, which Yousuke has recently been making good use of in his DJ sets.

Tracklist:

  1. Full Circle DJs – Things Past
  2. Buzzmasta – For Action (Full Circle DJs remix)
  3. Full Circle DJs – Break The Enter
  4. Shanty vs Epyx & Cyrez – Frozen Abyss (Full Circle DJs remix)
  5. Full Circle DJs – Halcyon
  6. DJ Rx – Hellfire (Full Circle DJs remix)
  7. Full Circle DJs – Gate Crasher

Yet another new mix, this one from Canadian dark freeform artist Micken. Although he’s been a bit quiet recently, now we know why – this mix has got a few new tunes soon to be released on Kreatrix and Electronica Exposed. Retribution and Rainforce are both excellent, and the mix itself is very well planned, with some unexpected/original track choices keeping things interesting…I was especially surprised at how well Lost Soul’s track fits into a ‘real’ dark freeform mix.

01 – Micken – Retribution (Forthcoming Electronica Exposed)
02 – Micken – Collar (Kreatrix)
03 – Nightforce – Break through the dream (Kreatrix)
04 – Twisted Freq – Dirtier World (Kreatrix)
05 – Micken – XC (Kreatrix)
06 – Micken – Rainforce (Forthcoming Electronica Exposed)
07 – Lost Soul – Drifting Entity (Electronica Exposed)
08 – Pain on Creation – Mortality (Finrg)
09 – Nightforce – Metaphysical Redemption (Kreatrix)
10 – Sam One – Mechanical (Electronica Exposed)
11 – RaverRose-TF – Eternal Kannon (DJ RX Remix)

I’m quite a fan of Eryk Orpheus, even if a lot of his tunes stick a bit too closely to the UK Freeform style of doing things for my liking. Some of his ‘oldies’ though, PVC and Surrounded by Insanity in particular, show a Finnish/UK influence that sounds really fresh. Here’s a new Live PA mix, then, featuring a lot of newer tunes – highlights for me include his Higher State remix, Demons 2007, and his remixes of DJ Rx’s Killer Instinct and Robert Miles’ Children. I’m not quite so keen on the others, but the mix is nicely put together and well worth checking out on its dontstayin topic. As Eryk mentions there, some of the tracks will be available on the digital arm of his Intelli-Trance label….very soon, no less.

1. Psyclic – Eryk Orpheus
2. Take Control – Eryk Orpheus
3. We have control – Alloy Mental (Eryk Orpheus’ Twisted Legboot)
4. FunkyPsyThang – Eryk Orpheus
5. If U Wanit – Eryk Orpheus
6. I Am Orpheus – Eryk Orpheus
7. Somacide – Eryk Orpheus
8. Higher State – Josh Wink (Eryk’s Fusion Lick Mix)
9. Demons 2007 – Eryk Orpheus
10. Killer Instinct – DJ Rx (Eryk Orpheus Remix)
11. Children – Robert Miles (Eryk’s Childish Mix)
12. Positive Evil – Pressure Technique featuring Eryk Orpheus and Sigmund Fraud

A couple of months back Cogi and I were having a bit of a talk about mixing/constructing sets, and how difficult/exciting it is to create a particular atmosphere. Anyway, Cogi recommended that I check out Shoko F’s fabulously-titled I’m Normal Technomania, a classic NRG mix from way back in 1997, as an example of how it should be done. Apparently Shoko F had an entire ‘story’ in mind while mixing, and imagined an epic journey through a Europe-style fantasy land – forging through a dark forest, emerging to find a huge castle, and so on. With this background info, listening to the mix is extremely impressive – not only is it nigh-on seamless, but the ebb and flow/structure of the set is superb, and a real inspiration. Of course, as an NRG/Hard Trance set, the mixing style is somewhat different to modern freeform, but the philosophy is applicable to all genres, I reckon – it’s definitely given me a lot of ideas for future mixes.

Slightly late with this news, but EE have recently announced another mammoth batch of releases to keep us all busy well into summer. First up is Lost Soul’s debut album, Human Being – I’m really a fan of Dark Angel and Bad Influence, but wasn’t too keen on Nightmare or his London Helsinki Underground remix, so I was wondering which Lost Soul would make an appearance here. The answer, as it turns out, is neither. At least from the samples I’ve heard, there’s a bigger trancecore/hard trance influence than was apparent in the older tracks, and it really sounds promising. Three cheers also for the nutty amens on What The…(Intro), which brought back some fond memories…good old jungle, eh? Finally, I’m sure you’ll agree that the cover artwork is fantastic, as it is on Firefly’s new release. Which leads us nicely on to….
