The next installment of BLACK MARIA isn’t far away (9th October), so now might be a good chance to check out this promo video put together with footage from the last event. The concept (mixing gabber, psy and burlesque-style performances) is really nice and with the unique (for Shibuya) setting it’s slightly reminiscent of club/show fusion events like Tokyo Decadance, Rituals etc. I missed the first one in June, but I’ll definitely be heading along next month.
Events
A brutal week is playing havoc with the posts right now, but I’m just in time to give BEEZEE’s Freeformaniacs set a shout. It’ll be broadcast at 10am (UK time) on the 29th, and by all accounts there’ll be some quality, nasty freeform on show. Support a fellow Horser, and be sure to check out Krafty Radio for the stream.
Little bit late notice, but tonight I’ll be playing some tunes on ustream for the first time in a few weeks. First of all it’ll be my Sabbath set (plus one or two bonus promos), then 30 minutes or so of brand-new freeform.
Sometime this week I’ll have a go at recording the Sabbath set, so this’ll be a final run-through, while the freeform finale will almost entirely be promos/new releases that I haven’t played on ustream before (or indeed, anywhere else). I’ve got some very nice new material that wasn’t dark enough for Sabbath, so apart from the potential calamities of using tunes I’ve never played before, this could be worth a listen.
The Sabbath set will be more familar, but I think there are some interesting connections, at least. Hope to see a few people for a chat and some tunes from 23:30 tonight!
I expect there’ll be more details to come later, but for now here’s some early warning for a fantastic project from our man Chip and DJ Midas. As most of the UK crew will know, this month’s Munted event was cancelled (depressingly due to insufficient ticket sales) and what was looking like an excellent lineup will have to wait for another time.
Instead, Chip and Midas have managed to round up some of the original DJs and organise an online version of the event! Substanced is still on board, and the lineup so far is A.B, Douglas, Dyzphazia, Midas, Substanced, Nexus Six, Endemic and Nick 325. Not bad at all, and as things stand the event will run from 11pm to 7am UK time. There’ll be another reminder closer to the 30th, but keep the Krafty Radio homepage handy until then.
Pain on Creation might have returned with the recent Fury Theme, but in Tokyo (as in Finland, I’m sure) PoC never really went away. Here’s Destroyed High staffer Yumipo dancing to Lush, just before the start of Kanon’s set.

I mentioned this the other day, but here’s confirmation of a great event next month. All sorts of genres and a massive list of DJs make this one to look forward to.

Destroyed High has turned into a monthly event these days, so last Saturday I took the chance to check out September’s edition. Kanon was the guest DJ this time, and the rest of the lineup was very good, including the set of the night from MIYUJOU.
I took a few videos this time – to spare the TYFTH front page from yet more embedded stuff, you’ll need to click below to take a look.
I’m not too sure when photos from last weekend’s Sabbath will be appearing, but this promo video (completed just a day or so ago) does an awesome job of conveying the atmosphere of the event. It has to be one of the very best I’ve ever played at, with an incredible crowd of underground characters who seemed ready to dance to just about any genre that was thrown at them. Huge thanks once again to ac-key and Siki for giving me the chance to appear at such an amazing event, but also to KANGU, Kohaku and the rest of the ravers for support, as well as to Alexis, Selia and the Decadance Bar staff.
The genres were far more varied than I was expecting, and both ac-key and Siki played two sets each. Siki’s first was a warm up, with some gentle psy and industrial, followed by ac-key’s jungle, dubstep and hard techno. For one reason or another RYO was very delayed, so Shou somehow fitted in a rock/metal set before starting his painting. After my set, Siki played some high bpm dark psy, and RYO finally appeared to play a brief session of hardcore-with-guitars. ac-key finished off the event with a great set of breakbeats and some more uplifting tunes.
After describing my style as ‘aggressive and melancholy’ on the flyer, I really tried to go all-out in that direction. By some miracle it ended up being one of my best-ever sets, and probably as close as I’ve ever gotten to what I think NRG/freeform should ‘really’ sound like. There weren’t many promos this time, partly because of the dark/melancholy drought we’re having these days, but also because I guessed that even the classics would be new to a lot of the crowd. Here’s the tracklist, then:
01. Stereo Junks – Chemistry (Proteus remix)
02. Epyx & Cyrez – Risk Addiction (Substanced remix)
03. Beati Mortui – Let the Funeral Begin (Proteus remix)
04. Alek Szahala – Sunray
05. FEN Project – Mad Man
06. Proteus – I See Things That You Don’t See (Guld remix)
07. Hase – Brionac [unfinished]
08. Alek Szahala – Maruuk
09. Alek Szahala – Voices of Babylon
10. Betwixt & Between – Zusammengehorigkeit
11. E-Noid – Order Chaos
12. Epyx & Cyrez – The Most Masochist
13. Epyx & Cyrez – When Left Alone
14. Dye In Sound – The Storyteller
15. Alek Szahala – Last of the Mohicans
16. RR-ThermalForce – Al Megiddo
The intro was supposed to ease the crowd into things with some guitars/goth style, while I tried to use Alek at certain points in the set to freshen things up and introduce some melodies (without ever getting into ‘trancy’ territory, of course). As luck would have it, the Let the Funeral Begin>Sunray connection was my best mix for months, so I’ll definitely be using that in a future studio set, and the extremely dark sequence from Zusammengehorigkeit to The Storyteller went down far better than I could have hoped…just a shame that I couldn’t fit Nomic’s Marilyn Manson remix in at the end. Anyway, Shou’s painting began during my set, and the atmosphere was just fantastic – watching the crowd go mad to When Left Alone while TSUMUGI did her thing next to the speaker was amazing, and right up there among my ‘best DJ moments’ so far.
I was lucky enough to make a few contacts during the night, so hopefully there’ll be more chances to get involved with this scene in the future. Next stop, Tokyo Decadance on the 24th…
Now that (the utterly awesome) Sabbath has finished, it’s about time to catch up on some stuff I’ve missed during the past week or so.
Remember the recent Harder.fi event? Well, massive thanks to Decion for letting me know about this – a very special, hour-long (!) video roundup of what happened, with footage of the blonde bombshell himself, plus Substanced, Amini, J7/Syntse and Heathen.
Einhander Live@NRGETIC ROMANCER 13,August 2011 by Shriekerz
Apologies for the NRGetic Romancer report being so late this time around. They tend to take a while to write and I’m horribly busy at the moment, but I’ll try to get something done after Sabbath has finished. As a preview, then, here’s what was maybe the set of the night.
Einhander played two Live PAs, but the first was under his hardstyle alias, Shriekerz. The second was a simply phenomenal Hard NRG set, and hard as it was to believe, his first time playing it at an event. Most of the crew agreed that we haven’t heard this standard of Hard NRG for a long time – Einhander’s tunes blew the place apart, and it was impossible not to get caught up in the insane filtering and awesome breakdowns.
Thanks to Einhander for putting the whole recording online – it’s fantastic to see the emergence of such a talented new producer here in Tokyo.
