Having been in stasis for a week or so, I’ve just realised that NRGetic Romancer vs ever free is only a week away! Tying in with the excellent flyer, I’ll be continuing the dark/aggressive style that I seem to have settled on lately (cheerful breakbeat hardcore sets aside).
Alchemiist – Parasite by Alchemiist
Alchemiist’s Parasite has been under construction for a while now, and it’s showing the benefits with some really top quality ideas. The first half does everything you’d expect – nasty synths with a nice pace to them, but the breakdown is close to something very special indeed, with its eerie atmosphere and melodies over the breakbeats. One of Alchemiist’s finest, no doubt.
AT recently uploaded some 30-second clips from last month’s Destroyed High, including this one of Merchen Diver playing Pain on Creation’s Mortality. The rest of the set included a lot of UK-style hardcore, but KA-NA took over at a couple of points to throw in Alek Szahala’s Lagash and Firecloud.
Take a look at Destroyed High’s YouTube account for clips from the other DJs (except AT himself, sadly).
Epyx & Cyrez – Risk Addiction (Substanced Remix) by Substanced / Subi
Thanks to illness and various other calamities I’ve been out of action for the last week or so, but now it’s about time to get things going again with a whistle-stop tour of what’s happened since the last post. Some of the biggest news has to be Substanced’s upcoming remix of the classic Risk Addiction – this does a brilliant job of injecting some pace into the original tune, and has to be one of the most promising ‘dark’ tunes so far this year.
Guld has given the all-clear to announce the next NRGetic Romancer, and it’s looking like the perfect way to (finally) get 2011 going. Once again it’s a collab with ever free, but this time the focus is on hardcore featuring just about all of the scene’s ‘top-level regulars’ (as the promotional text puts it). The flyer’s still to come, but check out the lineup in the meantime:

Right, I’ll be playing that breakbeat hardcore set in a couple of hours, and it’ll be very heavy on the oldskool samples/melodies, as well as a bit of drum and bass/modern hardcore style. We’ll be starting at 11pm, so feel free to stop by if you’re in the mood for some happier tunes this Sunday.
That new studio set is still under construction, and now I’m starting to think about next month’s NRGetic Romancer too, so to give my ears a rest this week’s Ustream set will be breakbeat hardcore. I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but as the Dreams Into Harder mix is still getting some nice feedback I thought I’d make use of the tunes I couldn’t fit into that one, plus a few newer releases. We’ll soon find out if last time was just beginner’s luck…
Things’ll get going at a later start time of 11pm, just in case I’m not feeling too perky after Destroyed High.
The first Destroyed High is one day away, so it’s about time for a look at the new event homepage. It’s a bit sparse right now, but there are already some artist profiles (in Japanese), links to the youtube channel and a short sample mix from AT. Sadly the set has a few messy transitions, but the selection gives a good idea of what AT will be playing tomorrow – Hybridize melodic freeform with added Guld-style nastiness.
Another mix from one of the TYFTH crew – this time it’s BEEZEE with an excellent set of melodic freeform. Although it includes both Aryx’s Chaldea and Aurora, the set mostly mixes up the odd bit of melancholy with plenty of UK-style energy. High fives to him for the inclusion of Colombia and Creation, tracks that were ‘released’ here on TYFTH, I bet Substanced and Rob.O.T.T will be pleased to see them getting some use in a set. Speaking of Colombia, the connection from that to Coming Up is so close to being a brilliant mix, it’s easy to see the thinking behind that one. The rest of the set’s technically great too, so this is another one in the ‘highly recommended’ category.
1. ENDEMIC + LOST SOUL – VOICE OF THE ECLIPSE
2. ARYX – CHALDEA
3. ENDEMIC – HURRICANE
4. SUBSTANCED – COLOMBIA
5. AB – COMING UP
6. ROB O.T.T – CREATION
7. NOMAD – LOSE IT
8. NOMIC – BLACK LOTUS
9. EPHEXIS – EXPLODER
10. LOST SOUL – MYSTERIOUS STRANGER
11. ARYX – AURORA
Level13 – Time – Finished by Level13 – TwistedFreq
Vocal-led freeform doesn’t tend to work that well, but here Level 13 has come up with a very catchy tune that gets the balance just about right. The trademark demented synths are in there (with one of the nicest pre-breakdown sequences I’ve heard for a while), but maybe more importantly the vocals themselves are really good quality.
