Alchemiist & Decion – Code Red (2012 Remix) – Preview by Decion

Alchemiist and Decion have restored my faith in (this kind of) Hard NRG recently with tunes like their Jigsaw remix, and this rework of Code Red might be their hardest tune so far. The breakdown just gets the balance right between building a dark atmosphere and leading us to the drop, while that pre-breakdown sequence is just awesome. Very promising signs for the final version, then.

Qygen – Moonlight Shower (Freeform Mix Remaster) by Qygen

I must admit that I completely forgot to post about Qygen’s new track a week or so back, but here it is for anyone who missed out until now. Moonlight Shower might be less obviously Freeform Goa than some other tunes on Qygen’s SoundCloud, but from the halfway point the track really hits its stride, once again with some fantastic melodies. The heavier kick might make this one a little easier to mix with ‘normal’ freeform, too.

Now that (the utterly awesome) Sabbath has finished, it’s about time to catch up on some stuff I’ve missed during the past week or so.

Remember the recent Harder.fi event? Well, massive thanks to Decion for letting me know about this – a very special, hour-long (!) video roundup of what happened, with footage of the blonde bombshell himself, plus Substanced, Amini, J7/Syntse and Heathen.

Einhander Live@NRGETIC ROMANCER 13,August 2011 by Shriekerz

Apologies for the NRGetic Romancer report being so late this time around. They tend to take a while to write and I’m horribly busy at the moment, but I’ll try to get something done after Sabbath has finished. As a preview, then, here’s what was maybe the set of the night.

Einhander played two Live PAs, but the first was under his hardstyle alias, Shriekerz. The second was a simply phenomenal Hard NRG set, and hard as it was to believe, his first time playing it at an event. Most of the crew agreed that we haven’t heard this standard of Hard NRG for a long time – Einhander’s tunes blew the place apart, and it was impossible not to get caught up in the insane filtering and awesome breakdowns.

Thanks to Einhander for putting the whole recording online – it’s fantastic to see the emergence of such a talented new producer here in Tokyo.

A slightly last minute heads-up that Dyzphazia (aka Chip, of course) will be appearing on the brand-new Freeformanics radio show tomorrow morning (UK time). This is a fantastic idea – a series of mixes from the crew at the Freeform Forum, covering all angles of the genre. Stray played the first set (a very nicely mixed UK freeform set), and this time around Dyzphazia will be showcasing some old and new tunes from Finland and Japan.

Make sure to check the Krafty Radio homepage tomorrow and show some support. There’ll be some really quality tunes, and rumour has it that the man himself will even be on the mic (!) to guide newbies through the tracks.

I always make it a rule to listen all the way through new sets before I post them on TYFTH, but sadly I haven’t yet had time for the full two hours this one needs. Mixed by Substanced to celebrate his upcoming gig at Munted (could there be a more British name for an event?), this is a real epic that runs through a whole stack of anthems.

The opening of the set must be a little sequence that Substanced has worked on lately – it’s really seamless stuff, and unless there are massive problems in the second half of the set (Substanced falling asleep at the decks?), by the halfway point it was shaping up to be one of the most enjoyable listens of the summer.

  1. Substanced – Geneva Part II
  2. Alek Szahala – Ziggurat
  3. Epyx & Cyrez – Risk Addiction (Substanced Remix)
  4. Horzi – Face The Destiny
  5. Substanced & Grimsoul – Harder Than U Think
  6. DJ RX – Frozen Flame
  7. Lost Soul feat. Dark Angel – Sacrifice
  8. Alek Szahala – Iron Squid

  10. Substanced – Shadows of Tomorrow
  11. Pain On Creation – V8
  12. Carbon Based – Titors Quantum Theory
  13. Substanced – Freeform Mercury
  14. Heliakon vs. Ephexis – Iliad –
  15. Alek Szahala – Deimos
  16. Endemic vs. Lost Soul – Voice of The Eclipse
  17. Lost Soul – Love Can Destory (Substanced Remix)
  18. Ethos & Dan Devotion – Cold –
  19. Kevin Energy & Proteus – London Helsinki Underground (K-Complex Remix)
  20. Nightforce & Substanced – Operation Stardust
  21. Eryk Orpheus & Mark Ashley – BTS

  23. Substanced – Aquarius
  24. Nomic – Unique Mind (Horzi Remix)

Lock Us Up – Forthcoming Electronica Exposed by Kreatrix

A bit slow off the mark this week, but something really worth mentioning is the new batch of releases from Electronica Exposed. Depending on sales, they might not even be the last we hear from the label, so anyone into Shanty’s brand of Finnish (and sometimes Japanese)-tinged UK Freeform should really show some support (and the sale on past releases is definitely worth checking out, too).

Another reason to support EE’s latest efforts is that Electronic Exclusives 20 – Til Death Us Do Part includes the newest vocal track from Kreatrix, Lock Us Up. More of a bouncy freeform tune than the recent (and awesome) Time, this is still a very nicely produced track that hovers between a few different styles.

Sabbath is a DJ-only version of the underground subculture event Lunatic Sabbath, and I’m honoured to be playing a guest set at vol.2 next weekend!

This is a perfect chance to introduce NRG/Freeform to a new crowd, which will probably be made up of goths, ravers and rock/metal/industrial fans. My trip to Rituals last weekend was something of a scouting mission to see what kind of tunes a similar crowd might enjoy, and after a bit of thought I’ll probably be starting off slower than usual. As RYO (the other guest DJ on the night) will be playing GrindCore/Death Metal (!), I might try to out-evil that with some very fast and nasty stuff towards the end.

I’m also excited about the venue – Decadance Bar in Shinjuku, which is run by the organisers of world-infamous subculture extravaganza Tokyo Decadance. It’ll be fantastic to meet some more of the crew connected with that scene, after playing NRGetic Romancer with Sisen and Takuya Angel a while back. Incidentally, KA-NA was the guest at the first event (also at Decadance Bar), and there’s a really nice photo report up on the Lunatic Sabbath site.

No news on a timetable just yet, but here’s the full info for the Japan crew, complete with my own (unexpectedly quoted verbatim) promo text. More details as and when, but hopefully some of the Romancer ravers will turn out for some support – I now have a week to come up with the best set possible, and there’s already some brand-new NRG lined up for the early stages.

PlasmaDancer – NRGetic Romancer 7th Anniversary by FINRG Recordings

No, your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you – it’s my first recorded NRG/Freeform set for over two years (!). Many thanks to Guld for allowing this 7th Anniversary mix to go online, it’s now downloadable via the FINRG SoundCloud.

A quick look at the tracklist will show it’s a little different to (and slower than) my past sets, as we were working with a a few restrictions this time. The tunes are limited to artists who’ve played at NRGetic Romancer in the past seven years, and the track selection was split between me and Guld (any guesses as to who chose what?). It was quite a challenge to come up with a decent set before the deadline, but I’m fairly happy with the end result.

Anyway, I’m especially pleased with the first half, and there’s plenty of new material for NRG fans. I was struggling to fit things in towards the end of the set, but I quite like the Frozen AbyssZiggurat connection, followed of course by DJ One Hit Wonder’s remix of Hell’s Gate.

My next recorded set is on pause yet again, for reasons I’ll probably explain later in the week, but feel free to give this set a listen. Feedback’s very welcome, as always!

01. Proteus – Try Harder
02. Adam Lab 4 – Infernal Desire (Lab 4 Psycho Surgery remix)
03. DJ X Lab 4 – Captain Black
04. Jody 6 & ConfigSys Project – Japanese Ghost Train
05. Lab 4 – Concept of Love (Guld remix)
06. Guld – Hannya X (Android Lime remix)
07. Shanty vs Epyx & Cyrez – Frozen Abyss (Full Circle DJs remix)
08. Alek Szahala – Ziggurat
09. Zio – Hell’s Gate (PlasmaDancer remix)
10. Betwixt & Between – Tout est Bien (Sein zum Tode)
11. RR-ThermalForce – Al Megiddo
