Cyberdyne Seba – Maximum FINRG Level

I noticed this FINRG set the other day from Cyberdyne Seba (a new follower of the TYFTH SoundCloud) and it’s certainly worth a shout here too. There’s a nice selection of old and new here, and while there’s nothing too out of the ordinary the first (more NRG themed) half of the set in particular has some really interesting connections. It’s always good to hear sets from places other than Finland, Japan or the UK, so hopefully Seba will be back at the freeform again soon.

A couple of days ago I noticed that this month is actually TYFTH’s 5th birthday! That would have been a nice landmark for the next mix, but as it’s a bit late in the day I’ve been thinking instead about a belated session on Ustream to celebrate. It looks as though the Ustream producer software has undergone a makeover since I last used it, but barring any problems I’ll be playing some schranz(!), NRG and freeform on Sunday night (Japan time).

Anyway, I obviously didn’t have a clue what was going to become of the site when I innocently wrote the first post – indeed it was pretty much just a place for top tens and trying out some rudimentary horrendous Japanese (I’m not quite Donald Keene yet, but I hope to the gods I’ve improved since then). Thinking about it, back in August 2007 I was still more than a year away from my Tokyo club debut, had only just finished Yamanote no Oto and was a pretty anonymous presence on the FINRG forums, so there’s definitely been progress on all sorts of fronts.

As always, heartfelt thanks to all the Horsers for their support – it’d be great to see a few people on Sunday for a catch-up.

[TYFTH Tracks] Level 13 – Is That All

The final upload for this week is a special one for Kreatrix fans – Level 13’s updated version of Is That All. We previewed it back in the day here on TYFTH, and earlier this year I used it in the first part of my 10 Years of FINRG set. While I’m not often a fan of vocal freeform, this is a very original tune with quite a different feel to a lot of tracks, while of course keeping the manic filtering that Kreatrix is famous for.

Looking at the downloads these past few days it seems that a fair number of people are discovering/catching up on the account’s older tracks too, so this is probably a nice point to stop the uploads for now. Fear not though – there are already some more tunes on the horizon which will be going online very soon indeed.

Fantastic news from the Smiling Corpse crew – the first full CD compilation has now been released, and is available to buy from the SC site. For a mere £5.37 you can get hold of some of the best tunes of the year so far while helping to ensure there’ll be more releases to come in the future, making this an absolute must-buy. Massive congrats to SC for an awesome release, and of course for firmly supporting the deeper side of the scene.

[TYFTH Tracks] Pulse – Warped Reality

The next track on the upload is a 180 bpm stormer from Pulse, the Hungarian producer who’s now a veteran of many a freeform release. Very heavy on the acid, this is another track with a hint of Hybridize about it, thanks to the piano breakdown and lively melodies. Many thanks to Pulse (and apologies for the massive delay), I can imagine this one in a lot of different sets – which hopefully means that it will appeal to quite a wide range of freeform heads.

The first half has some very nice freeform selections, while the second half heads into big kick/gabber territory. This variety makes it well worth a listen, and at two hours long you’re really getting two sets for the price of one.

[TYFTH Tracks] Rob.O.T.T. – Children

The next tune on the TYFTH SoundCloud is Children, another of Rob.O.T.T’s impressive first efforts at producing freeform. The hint is in the title, but this is actually a bootleg remix of Robert Miles’ mid-nineties chart bothering trance track, freeformed up with some superb filtered sections during the intro/outro. Although it’s already up there quality-wise with a lot of Hybridize tracks, it was never completely finished (this is a ‘first draft’) and so didn’t get the release it deserved.

Marilyn Manson – Resident Evil Main Theme (J-Gear bootleg remix)

Thanks this time to Meke for pointing me in the direction of J-Gear’s remix of the Resident Evil theme. I haven’t seen any of the films, so tonight I’ve learned that Manson was behind the original, and that Nightforce sampled this section for his now-classic Symphony For The Devil. Slightly hamstrung by the genre, J-Gear’s version can’t quite match that, but this is another quality schranz track to follow Rock you like a Hurricane.

The return of TYFTH Tracks

Yes indeed, this week’s announcement is the return of free tunes on TYFTH, after being cryogenically frozen for a year or so. I’m really happy that the account is alive again, but things have obviously changed a lot in the scene since it first started. These days there are plenty of labels doing a very professional job of releasing new music for free, and so my original ambitious plans have been scaled back – that particular Horse has long since bolted.

I reckon there’s still a place for tunes on TYFTH though, and from now on the SoundCloud will hopefully be performing two main roles. The first is to be a place for up-and-coming producers to get some extra publicity – the account already has quite a decent following, which now combines with infinite downloads and strength in numbers among all the other free tunes, making it a nice stepping stone to the ‘real’ labels for new artists. The second role is to make some older tracks available that otherwise would be forgotten, starting tonight with the excellent Whipped remix/mashup.

It should be clear already, but the account absolutely isn’t meant as a competitor to any of the other free labels out there, rather as a ‘training ground’ before making the step up to better things/an archive for older material. That doesn’t mean the tracks won’t be worth listening to, as I’ll be aiming to keep the standard high, even if it’ll be significantly lowered by any of my own tunes that end up there.

Many thanks to Tyranoid & Strongstream for starting us off again with Whipped, a slightly edited mashup with the Substanced remix from many years ago. I have a few other tracks that were originally submitted back when the account went into hibernation, so there’ll be one or two of them going online every day or so next week. After that it’ll be dependent on submissions, so do feel free to get in touch if you think you might have something that fits the rambling description above.
