Happy New Year to all the TYFTH crew!

Hopefully everyone will have a great 2012, and it’ll be a kinder year to Japan, too. Musically, 2011 was really interesting, as I got the chance to play some wonderful gigs, meet a lot of nice folk from a few different scenes, and introduce new audiences to our music. This year’s already looking pretty special, with the launch of Watchtower and FINRG’s 10th Anniversary, which will be the event to end all events – hard to believe that exactly two months from now I’ll be arriving in Helsinki.

Massive, properly heartfelt thanks to everyone for supporting me and TYFTH itself for the past year – I had to put things on autopilot a couple of times, but I really appreciate all the input from everyone here, and the contact I’ve had from Horsers away from the site. It’s awesome that at least some people seem to think of this as their freeform ‘home’ these days, and I’ll be doing my best to make it a more comfortable/interesting place to hang out. Obviously that includes the forum – later this month I’ll have more time on my hands (as will the resident TYFTH tech Jedi), so that’s genuinely still on the way.

Sorry to start things with an ambient dnb track, but this one has a bit of a New Year vibe to it – little did I know when I bought Earth back in ’96 that 16 years later I’d be in Tokyo, head-nodding away to this at 4am on a New Year morning.

B. R. K.- evil against evil by B. R. K.

After his recent releases on FINRG, BRK is back in the mixing game with a nice set that shows us what to expect from his FINRG B2B with Heathen. Starting off with a great intro, Evil Against Evil runs through a lot of the classics of the past few years, plus some excellent tunes from Tommy Pulse and a nice collab between Phil York and Dark by Design that I haven’t heard before. A bit of a surprise not to see any of BRK’s own tracks in here, but for anyone into the Lab 4 / Android Lime sound this is a must listen.

  1. Intro
  2. DJ-X Lab4 – Ephedrine
  3. Android Lime – Sex and Violence
  4. Fausto & Tommy Pulse – Melancholika
  5. Android Lime-robot noize ( DJ-X Lab4 rmx )
  6. Tommy Pulse – Messiah ( Resurrection mix )
  7. Lab4-Requiem ( Heart of Darkness 2009 )
  8. Psycho Keaton – Hellnight ( Android Lime rmx )
  9. Lab4 – Groove Overdrive
  10. Phil York vs Dark By Design-Disarray
  11. Aikon – Dream On ( Schwarzende rmx )
  12. The Engineer and Hellraiser – Legion “For We Are Many” ( God is not here with us mix )

A real treat for those who haven’t been following the Freeform Forum, the Freeformaniacs Christmas Special is now online and is an excellent way to spend a couple of hours. The concept was for 12 DJs to mix for 10 minutes each, creating one mammoth set that covers just about every angle of the freeform scene. It’s actually a brilliant way to hear a few different styles of tune, as even if they’re not your thing, just hang in there for 10 minutes and there’ll be a different flavour of freeform to check out.

All in all, a really great project and clearly very well coordinated – massive congratulations to Stray and everyone else involved.

PlasmaDancer – Munted! Monthly! Episode 1, 17th December 2011 by FINRG Recordings

It seems as though a few people have been good enough to check out this set already, which went online a day or so ago. I genuinely couldn’t have wished for a better reaction from the Krafty chatroom crew on the night, and since then there’s been some really nice feedback from those who missed it first time around. I’ve actually had a couple of questions in the past from Horsers who wanted to know how I construct my sets, so permit me if I may to talk a little a lot about the thinking behind this one.

Yesterday saw the launch of Watchtower, a brand new label with a philosophy on the scene that almost exactly matches TYFTH. Run by Endemic, the label will be aiming to bring deeper, darker, more melancholy freeform to a wider audience, and the upcoming first release is a promising step in that direction.

As well as tunes from UK stalwarts like Lost Soul and Douglas, there are excellent tracks from Aryx (Solar Flare) and Proteus (Get Fire!), while it’s awesome to see Qygen finally recognised by a label. Some of the tunes this time around are heavier on the wobbly basses than I like to play, but overall there’s some really high quality material here and it should prove to be a nice gateway into the deeper sound for some freeform listeners.

Keep an eye on the Watchtower site for more info – preorders are already available for the first release.

Now that the excellent first edition of Munted! Monthly! has been and gone, I’ve finally had time to check Alek Szahala’s recent HBC set. As expected, it’s top quality, and the new material is a wonderful return to the darker side of Alek’s production.

Enuma Elish is a fantastic track, with a repetitive-yet-addictive main riff and an aggressive feel that really recalls classics like Maruuk, while it’s also great finally hear both Macuahuitl and the beautiful Dawnstar in a set. By all accounts Alek devastated the Krafty chatroom, and it bodes very well indeed for his set next March.

The timetable for Munted! is now up, and I’ll be finishing the night off with my set. If anything it looks like I’ll have to leave out a lot of great tunes, but I’m tentatively happy with how things are coming together so far…

Announced earlier this week, Alek Szahala will play a set this evening on the Hard Beats Collective Show! Word is that there’ll be some new material to hear, but even if not chances to catch Alek’s Live PAs are few and far between, making it a must listen. It all starts at 10pm (GMT) on Krafty Radio – thanks to the time difference I’ll already be at work in Yokohama, so hopefully it’ll be recorded.

Preparation for Munted! Monthly! is slowly coming together, and so far I’ve been trying to put together a set reminiscent of Yamanote and the Monogatari mixes. Still plenty of work to do, but it’ll be starting at 175bpm with a few nice surprises, I hope…
