Proteus – Get Fire! preview by Proteus Official

Almost a week since the last post, and as luck would have it quite a lot has happened lately. First of all, here’s what must be one of the tunes of the year – Proteus’ Get Fire! This is a truly fabulous track that brings back memories of old FINRG releases, while still keeping that modern Proteus feel. Check out the oldskool Carbon Based-style sounds towards the end of the preview…It’s already scheduled for release on Watchtower, the excellent new label that will be launching very soon. Stay tuned for more info!

Members of the Freeform Forum will have seen this announcement already – Dyzphazia (our man Chip) and Midas are setting up Munted! Monthly!, a freeform-only show on Krafty Radio, and I’m honoured to have been invited to play a guest set on the first edition. DJ Douglas of Hard Beats Collective is the other guest, making an impressive four hours’ worth of full-on freeform.

This is a fantastic opportunity to get freeform even more exposure, and the ‘global’ angle of the DJ selections should result in the Krafty crew hearing some artists/styles for the first time. I usually like to take a few years to pick tunes for a set, but I’ll be doing my best to choose some must-listen Japanese tunes amongst the new releases/promos. Thanks a million to Chip and Midas for a very rare chance to show what the Tokyo scene is all about.

Hopefully there’ll be a good TYFTH contingent listening on the 17th – it all starts at 10pm GMT on Krafty Radio.

BEEZEE – MINOTAUR by BEEZEE

Time for another energetic freeform session from Mr B, covering just about every angle of the scene. The first half will please the melodic crew, while the second half (from Operation Stardust) takes a welcome turn for the twisted with Unholy Word, Surendrajit and a nice contrast in Nephila.

The more familiar tunes haven’t shown up in recent sets, so even without many elaborate connections Minotaur makes for a really enjoyable hour or so – I’m sure I’ve said this before about Beezee’s sets, but this would a great one to hear in a club setting.

1. Grimsoul – Jaan Hautaamat (Oli G Remix)
2. Trancend – Mindglow
3. DJ RX – Code Of Silence (Sam One Remix)
4. Alabaster – Fluorite
5. Lost Soul – Tentacles Of Love
6. Andy Dee – Solas An Lae
7. Nightforce & Substanced – Operation Stardust
8. Alek Szahala – Unholy World
9. Betwixt & Between – Surendrajit (2011 Refix)
10. Aryx – Nephila
11. DJ Noriken – Moonlight Cluster

Substanced & Jnks – Seismic Activity (Transcend Remix) by FINRG Recordings

Transcend’s upcoming remix of Seismic Activity is actually the first in a series of remixes for Substanced’s album, When the World Collapses. This is a perfect choice for a UK-style remix, and Transcend has done a great job making the most of that catchy main melody.

Stay alert for more previews – there are some potentially amazing tracks under construction.

Aryx – Birthday mix (2011) Freeformaniacs show by Aryx

Anyone reading TYFTH will probably have checked out this certified must-listen set already, but here’s a belated post for those who don’t know. After Aryx’s fantastic Chaldea and Aurora, the question was always going to be whether he could possibly match them and keep his inspiration up…

Well the answer’s a big yes – the first half of his Freeformaniacs set is mind-blowingly good, and there’s no doubt that Aryx is now right at the top of the trancy freeform tree, alongside Alek/Paocala. He’s still (understandably) got some work ahead to match Alek’s all-round quality, but the standard here is already amazingly high – among the wonderful new material are little glimmers here and there of the emotional, deeper freeform that we so rarely hear these days, and that’s what makes the set so exciting.

The rest of the set is a nice combination of older tracks, though the more UK freeform-sounding melodies of Transmission can’t quite live with the rest of the quality on show, it might have been nicer to hear something a bit more aggressive/melancholy before Inexistenz.

Anyway, massive congratulations (and Happy Birthday) to Aryx – hopefully this set will get the recognition it deserves!

Well well…you can imagine how hard it’s been for me not to mention this until Rx’s announcement last night, but the lineups/venue for March’s 10 Years of FINRG are now decided! The main floor is looking utterly fantastic, and although there are three huge absences in Nomic, Re-Form and Epyx & Cyrez, that’s countered by E-NRG, Pain on Creation’s Live PA (!) and a potentially brutal B2B between Heathen and BRK.

I’ll be there too…and not only that, but I’ll be playing a solo set in the second ‘Urban’ room! I’m genuinely honoured to be taking part in such a huge event, and rest assured that I’ll be doing my very best to represent both Hybridize and Romancer.

This could be the event to end all events, and it’s also going to be awesome to finally meet all the wonderful folk I’ve come to know through FINRG and TYFTH. There’s still plenty of planning to be done, but I’ll obviously be in Helsinki, Lahti and possibly elsewhere if time/money allows. Oh, a bit of practical advice for any Horsers planning to attend – apparently there’s a ski event of some kind on at the same time as the event, so despite it still being some way off, most/all of the hotels in Lahti are already fully booked.

Anyway, the countdown begins now – for the time being, massive thanks to DJ Rx, Drumhead (Carbon Based) and the rest of the FINRG crew!

I’ve finally had a chance to check out Pearsall’s newest mix, and it’s an absolute must-listen for anyone interested in the roots of freeform. Concentrating on the earliest of early tracks from the late 90s/early 2000s, the tunes from this era have a really nice feel, replacing the happy melodies of the mid-90s with trance/NRG-style acid and hoovers. Pre-internet and trapped in darkest Wales, I still managed to hear a few of the tunes in this set via pirated event mixtapes and the occasional trancecore set on Radio Cymru…the majority are new to me though, which made it a another fantastically educational listen.

Pearsall has done some fine work on the set itself, structuring it brilliantly, while the mixing is of course top class. Once again he has gone beyond the call of duty in his original post, taking the time to write a genuinely interesting summary/history of each and every track.

The tracklist is down below, but check the post on Sonicrampage for the download link.

01. Miss Nic & DJ Swoon – Der Sturm (GBT)
02. M-Zone – Into The Future (Jon The Dentist Future Mayhem) (Boscaland)

19. Trixxy – Here To Invade (Bonkers)
20. Sharkey – Hard Life (React)

Very late notice, but here’s something that should definitely interest some of TYFTH’s J-core crew. UK/J-Core event Tokyo CASE has booked Sc@r to play at a special early-evening event with Shimamura, kors-k, Genki and Betwixt & Between. Interestingly the event’ll be broadcast on ustream, and there’ll also be a Q&A session after Betwixt’s set. That’s where I come in, as I’ve been asked to interpret (!) for Sc@r when the questions are directed at her. From past experience I know that my brain tends to shut down when I have to switch between English and Japanese, so this could be…interesting, to say the least. The rest of the timetable is looking nice though, so calamitous translations aside, this could be really worth checking out.

Thanks to Technoid for pointing me in the direction of this new interview with Proteus, marking his upcoming double set epic at Sinistry this weekend. The great man always gives a good interview, and this one has some particularly nice info on his industrial group and upcoming gigs. I can only find the interview on Facebook at the moment though, so probably only those who’ve sold their soul to Zuckerberg’s Procrastination Engine will be able to view this link for now.

Another mix to enjoy today, this time from fellow Horser and Freeformaniacs crew member BEEZEE. We’d been warned to expect some darker tunes, and our man definitely doesn’t disappoint, with the kind of consistently nasty/twisted atmosphere that would cause chaos on dancefloors here. After BEEZEE’s excellent past mixes it’s no surprise that the mixing is really top class (that Moonshine>Godd connection is very special), and it’s also interesting to see the tracklist similarities between this and Dyzphazia’s Munted set (previous post). Congratulations to Amini for having Eupraxia played in both!

Once again then, another must listen – download the whole set (with the one like Stray on mic duty) via the Freeform Forum thread.
