Mixes

Another great set this week comes courtesy of Custom Built DJ’s Jon Mysterave – a nicely selected tribute to Kreatrix. With its firm commitment to the dark side and a relentlessly high bpm, Twisted Freq’s label was in many ways ahead of its time, so praise be for sets like this that remind both veterans and rookies of the good old days. Tracks like Wannabe Gansgstah and Danse Macabre aren’t heard too often anymore, but here sound as good as ever alongside classics like Unleashed and Exaltation. Kudos to Mr Mysterave too for spreading out the ‘breakbeat tunes’, giving a really nice overall rhythm to the mix.

Make the extra effort to negotiate the not-so-familiar TempoPlus site, this one is really worth a download.

Endless commutes and 6-day workweeks are back again, meaning lots of time to check out the latest cluster of freeform sets. My favourite so far has to be Dyzphazia’s newest effort for the evergreen Freeformaniacs show, a wonderful selection of melodic, twisty freeform. This time around my pick of the connections is the early Bass Dust The Dome transition that does a superb job of switching up the atmosphere, but the whole set is top quality and easily one of Dyzphazia’s best this year. A must-listen, then.

1 ) Re-Form – Silver Cube (Extended Mix) [CDr]
2 ) Noisia – Dustup [Vision Recordings]
3 ) Blokhe4d & Receptor – Bass Dust [Bad Taste]
4 ) Alchemiist – The Dome [CDr]
5 ) Pain On Creation – Lush (Fatal Error Edit) [FiNRG]
6 ) Nomic – Mekhanika Child [CDr]
7 ) Carbon Based – Dark Side [FiNRG]
8 ) Douglas & Lost Soul – False Sense Of Security [NuEnergy]
9 ) Nightforce – Symphony For The Devil [Electronica Exposed]
10 ) Wyrm & Surtr – Yggdrasil [Ruffbeatz/Freeformaniacs]
11 ) Helical & Oli G – Days Of Thunder [Camel Records]
12 ) Helikaon vs. Ephexis – Illiad [NuEnergy]
13 ) Aryx – Aurora (Substanced Unfinished Forever Remix) [CDr]
14 ) Le Dos-On – Sena [SPLASH! Energy Records]

Byproduct’s latest set includes his excellent Concorde remix, and I’d say that’s enough of an excuse to make it the headlining post for today. This is a live PA that once again lives up to the description – even without the synth twiddlings that were surely part of the full performance, there’s plenty going on here with the track edits and lovely connections.

For those who (inexplicably) haven’t been keeping up with Byproduct lately this set will be a treat, with a lot of new material. Starting off with the downright hilarious-awesome remix of Gangnam Style (which thanks to my stubborn avoidance of YouTube trends I discovered through this tune), there are game remixes aplenty and some superb stuff from Byproduct himself.

Listen up above, download from Byproduct’s site, and enjoy a brief promo video of the event in sunny Lahti.

Well, thanks a million to everyone who listened to the ustream set tonight – I’m just sorry I wasn’t able to chat more, as even though it might not have been the best set ever I was still very busy with the connections. Anyway, as we mentioned in the chatroom I’ll try my best to do at least one TYFTH Live each month, probably on a Sunday evening.

I won’t record them, but unless there’s anything too top secret I’ll add the tracklist afterwards, starting tonight. At the start I was trying out some schranz, then playing a few new freeform tracks for the first time.

I noticed this FINRG set the other day from Cyberdyne Seba (a new follower of the TYFTH SoundCloud) and it’s certainly worth a shout here too. There’s a nice selection of old and new here, and while there’s nothing too out of the ordinary the first (more NRG themed) half of the set in particular has some really interesting connections. It’s always good to hear sets from places other than Finland, Japan or the UK, so hopefully Seba will be back at the freeform again soon.

Incidentally, once I get a free moment over the next couple of days there are a few more sets to mention that are not to be missed – stay tuned.

Thanks to work I usually miss the Freeformaniacs shows, but earlier this month I was able to catch most of a lovely set from Olly Addictive and Wyrm. The first half has some very nice freeform selections, while the second half heads into big kick/gabber territory. This variety makes it well worth a listen, and at two hours long you’re really getting two sets for the price of one.

  1. Xombei – Thunderhead
  2. Audio X – Sugar
  3. Carbon Based & DJ Rx – Biomechanoid
  4. Grimsoul – Kadotettu Todellisuus
  5. Wyrm – Tendrils of Reality
  6. Dok & Dodgee – Inside
  7. Oli G & Invader – Living Hell
  8. Oli G & Jessica – Miasma
  9. Shanty vs. Epyx & Cyrez – Trippy Hippy

  11. Penguin Conspiracy – Tripswitch
  12. Micken – Robot Captain
  13. Epyx & Cyrez – I C U
  14. Ophidian & Nosferatu – Psychiatric Ass
  15. Orifice – I’m Broken
  16. Scott Brown – Enemy
  17. Andy Freestyle – Warrior Sound
  18. Scott Majestik – Psycopathic Bitch
  19. AMS & Shanty – Hardcore Renegade

  26. Endymion – Anger (Ophidian Remix)
  27. I:gor – Gimme Some More

A new mix from AT/Asahi is always welcome, he’s really settling into a twisted-but-melodic style these days. Reboot System keeps up this tradition with an excellent mix of Japanese and Finnish tracks. There’s no tracklist, but Asahi’s obviously been promo hunting to combine some classic oldies with a few unreleased tracks, creating a very nice atmosphere.

By the way, stretching the definition of ‘the next few days’ a bit, but as I’ve got other non-TYFTH-related music stuff to do tonight the first of the mildly-interesting announcements will be coming tomorrow.

I don’t often listen to hard trance these days, but this combination of sets from Meke and Neon is a real history lesson of tracks from the 2000s. The second set speeds up nicely at the end, ending with I’m sure is a Nomic track – can anyone remember the name? Even after checking with Neon I’m none the wiser, but it definitely sounds familiar. Mystery IDs aside, this is a lovely collection of tunes if you’re looking for a melodic interlude.

There’ll be an extra post or two tomorrow, but for now here’s a quick heads up that the mix section has finally been updated with my two Munted! Monthly! sets. Thanks to TYFTH’s presence in the Facebook Freeform Hardcore group and my wanderings around Tokyo’s non-hardcore events, it seems there might have been some new faces checking out the site over the past couple of months. About time to get things up to date then…

Incidentally, there’ll be quite an exciting development here very soon (as in, the next few days), plus a hopefully interesting announcement sometime after that. Stay tuned, as they say.

Surely everyone’s heard this set by now, but anyone who somehow missed it is in for a real treat. Substanced and Aryx are two artists who’ve really come into their own over the past year, and the guys’ tracks work fantastically well together, maybe even better than I expected.

There’s a great flow to the tracklist too (including some great new material), and it must have done all sorts of damage when heard live. Thank the gods that this is a clean recording though, without the MC who was apparently present during the set – how an MC could add anything of value to a freeform set is absolutely beyond me, but particularly when the tracks are as emotional and aggressive as these. I’d imagine the last thing most people need is a ‘host’ telling them when to dance, and if it was a case of the MC rhyming over the tunes…well, no comment.

Anyway, congratulations to both Substanced and Aryx on an excellent set – it was Aryx’s first gig abroad, but more are sure to follow if he keeps up the momentum that has placed him in the front rank of producers these days.
