Events

This one is unannounced, but as I’m in the mood to play a few tunes, why not stream it too? In a few minutes’ time I’ll be playing a bit of hard NRG/freeform, so I’ll leave the stream open here too. Anyone who happens to stop by, feel free to say hi!

I’m in the middle of planning a new set, but I’m keeping it secret for now, and there won’t be many (if any) of those tunes on show today.

Belated Merry Christmas to everyone on TYFTH, I hope it’s turning out to be a good one. All being well, we should have a few more posts to come before the end of the year –  let’s start things off with another new set, this time from Proteus. This one was mixed to promote the Frantic NYD event in London, so arguably it’s aimed at more of a mainstream hard dance audience, but there are as many blinding tunes as you’d usually expect. No tracklist, but as the set opens with Fist of the North Star and features Hesotarou Tankobu towards the end, you know it’s one to check out.

edit: Many thanks to Nisse for taking the time to put a very-close-to-complete tracklist together. If anyone has an idea what the missing tunes might be, let us know…

edit 2: Belated thanks to Technoid for the ID on track 10!

1. Proteus – Fist of the North Star
2. Wragg & Log:One – Enemies of Earth
3. Public Domain Soundsystem – Automatic Audio Overload (The Machine Mix)
4. ?
5. Andrea Montorsi ft Diana J – Phantasy
6. Force 9 – Boomin (Wragg & Log:One Remix)
7. Studio X – The Drill (Proteus Remix)
8. Satronica – Blood On Fire (Waldhaus Remix)
9. Betwixt & Between – The Wander of Hesotarou Tankobu (Proteus Remix)
10. Satronica – Shivered
Download it (along with some other hard dance sets, if you’re that way inclined) here.

Just when it was turning into one of those weeks for freeform, here we have a brand new set from Alek Szahala to keep us going into the new year. This one was recorded during Alek’s recent gig in Canada, and there’s plenty of new/updated material along with staples like Maruuk and Iron Squid. Listen out for the slightly Nomic-esque breakcore (?) track in the second half – it stands out a little in amongst all the freeform, but it’s a very nice experimental tune. The excellent Starcrossed and what I think is a reworking of his Baldur’s Gate II remix are other new tunes, while Phobos is sounding as incredible as ever.

You’d have to be mad not to give this a listen – here’s a tracklist of what I recognise so far, thanks to Jiipez for the help!

  1. Alek Szahala – Ascend to the Stars
  2. Alek Szahala – Astraia
  3. Alek Szahala -Deimos
  4. Alek Szahala – Maruuk
  5. Alek Szahala – Lagash
  6. Alek Szahala – Iron Squid
  7. Alek Szahala -Wraithverge
  8. Alek Szahala – Starcrossed
  9. Alek Szahala – Vengeance (2007 edit)
  10. Alek Szahala – Pax Eranae
  11. Chanel 5 – Never Forget (Alek Szahala remake)

No news yet on NRGetic Romancer, but we’ve got another tasty event coming up before the end of the year. I’m guessing that this versus affair between THC and the brilliantly-named Rainbow Devil will be on two floors of Cube, as the list of DJs seems to go on forever.

I managed to get down to Shinjuku at the very last minute for this one, and it was worth it just to see suge playing for the first time. His set was supposed to be a Live PA, but he was mixing from one CDJ to the other too – only using his own tracks though, from what I could tell. There were a fair few from the Chimera album, but I don’t recognise the tune in the video above. As usual, my camera doesn’t do it justice, but that build-up really sounded amazing.

The rest of the event was pretty hit and miss, with some very weird timetabling, and for once I left early. The Hardcore Regiment set (featuring Azsa, Kanon and Betwixt & Between) turned out to be 40 minutes or so of quality hardcore/gabber anthems – I was hoping for some TOTAL DISCOMMUNICATION tracks mixed in with some THC classics, but Betwixt was on MC duty (!) this time, leaving Kanon and Azsa to play the tunes.

Now this looks more than promising – Nitro X will be covering all sorts of harder genres, and there are a whole host of killer names on the bill. Standout DJs are THC’s Inugami and Azsa, but there’s also a live PA from suge, a performance from THC’s scratch-demon NDE and a potentially incredible ‘Hardcore Regiment’ b2b(2b?) featuring Azsa, Kanon and Betwixt & Between.

All the video has finally been uploaded, so let’s take a look at what went on at the last NRGetic Romancer. This one was very special, with the 6th Anniversary the reason for a massive collaboration between Romancer, ever free and Adrenaline. It ended up being the event of the year so far, with a brilliant mixed crowd that really went for all the different styles being played.

As for me, it was probably my best set of the year too, maybe because I just went all out with a high bpm right from the start. The timing of the event worked out perfectly too, with some absolutely amazing tracks being completed just in time. We’ve got quite a lot of video this time from Soham, Kaz-B and my pixellated mess of a camera, so click below to check them all out.

Last weekend was Dreams Into Harder, and despite the really low turnout/bit of admin chaos it was all great fun to take part in. In the end it turned out to be a good choice to go with breakbeat hardcore, what with everyone else playing high bpm trancey happy hardcore.

Standout set was DJ 490’s very technical happy hardcore, with NEMO’s Scouse House a close second. DJ Minagi’s Anison (anime soundtrack!) and hard trance was a thing to behold – I didn’t have a clue what was going on half the time, but he mixed it all amazingly well. My set was so much fun to play that I actually re-recorded it at home last night – click below for the tracklist/mp3 and some photos from the event.
